• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

First day to work on 2000 GT

My grandson and I were finally able to get together for a day and work on the Grand Prix we picked up for $450. We needed a new battery but the tray was so dingy and rusty we pulled it and I had him wire wheel it good and got a couple coats of paint on it. Install went pretty well. Took out the airbox on the other side, cleaned a mouse nest out of it, pressure washed all the removed pcs and got them all reinstalled along with a new air filter and a good cleaning of the MAF sensor with some MAF cleaner. Pulled out the air idle control and tps and looked them over as well, looked fine. Got it warmed up and changed the oil, going to gave to change the front valve cover gasket but we have a few months till he's 16 so it can wait till another weekend. He washed the whole car, inside and out and it looks surprisingly nice!

Now the real reason for the post. We knew going in the car has some issues. Upon acceleration, the car seems to surge ahead like you are giving it more gas than you really are. This is holding the throttle steady. It's like someone is pedaling the gas pedal. Anyways, if you hit the throttle hard it runs great and I don't think there are any mechanical issues here, more controls related I am guessing. Tranny is smooth but while the engine is pulsing, it doesn't want to shift up to the next gear until I back off the throttle a bit. If you just putt around the car runs perfect, tranny shifts smoothly and all seems well. But who can drive like an old grandma everywhere so we are asking from experience what you guys think. I will borrow a code reader but can't get it until Tuesday. There is no cel symbol on in the dash but I am sure there are some.

Lastly, I have read a lot of stuff on here and keep seeing different letters for stuff. I think we found the computer in the bottom of the airbox, is that correct? And what is the box under the front seat do? Thanks guys and sorry for the long post.

Computer is in the air box. You can just leave it out and zip tie it's down. It's water proof

it could need a tune up real bad. use iridium plugs, store brand wires work just fine. i dont see the miles listed so ill assume they are high. clean the TB too.

box under the seat, if you mean the pass front seat thats the air bag module. its under the carpet.

Just looking at the tps can't tell you if its fine you need to test it with a multi-meter or hook a scan tool up to the car and make sure the voltage changes smoothly as you depress the accelerator and that it doesnt jump around a bunch when holding it in one spot.

Read the codes a little bit ago, my friend brought one over. It said 0102 and 0122. You guys were rt on. So we looked that up to be the MAF and TPS. I am going to search for how to check the voltage on that TPS. Would it be worth my while to grab them used at a great pick and pull near me? Remember, this is for a kid saving his money rt now and pap is funding the project at the moment. I have had 3 vehicles with this 3800 motor and never had either of these problems but I always sold them rt around
140K , rt where this one is at now. Also, I am sure it could use a tune up. Just not wanting to go throwing money at things until I figure the main problems out. Thanks

junk yard parts are fine, aka pocket parts lol petty theft if you will.

if you buy the parts they will warranty them for 30 to 60 days most of the time.

check the wires to the maf and tps. they bake in the heat form the cross over and get cracks and breaks in the insulation.

your maf code is for low voltage, so bad wires to the plug will cause this code. as well as the #21 fuse being blown as well. check those out. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0102

Thanks, you guys are leading me to some very interesting information! I am old school, lol. I do have an old Nova I redid myself but they are simple compared to all this electronic stuff.

yeah, toss me some new points and a timing gun any day lol this pcm crap is all new to me too. truth is its a better way to run a engine.

back in the day the dummy light was you hearing or feeling something was wrong.
