F-body brakes?

I wouldnt mind some pics of the rears if you wouldnt mind. If that is what it is going to cost to upgrade the rears, then I'll just leave those stock or swap them out for some lighter grand am brakes and do F-body brakes up front. Though I have concerns about the mushy feel of the F-body brakes with its dual piston set up.

We'll see. Drop 20#'s or so with the Grand Am brakes and install SS lines or do dual piston F-body brakes up fron with SS Lines and hope that corrects some of the mushiness.

The mushy pedal feel is really easy to get use to actually. The rear upgrade you can get done for prob about 200 from a junk yard but ull really have to search hard to find it and also might have to buy the fronts. Also make sure it is the actual GXP caliper before u buy it cuz a lot of junk yards get confused on this part. easy way to do that as if the rotors are drilled, ask if the rear caliper is made by PBR(not sure if the front is) and as it ifs painted red.

Picture problem too. I jsut realized ive got my 18's on as of now but will be putting the stockers back on in about a month. Id do a quick swap for the pic but my stock rims are about 130 miles away at the moment lol. sry but if i can get ot done before i swap for the winter ill let u know and post a pic.

Dont go through any trouble, I was just curious as to what Id be getting into with that option, its not a big deal if you cant do the pics.

i dont have any mushy feel from my f body set up. bleed the brakes properly and theyre as hard as a rock

You should though have a longer pedal throw before you get the brakes engage. this is because it requires my brake fluid to fill the dual larger piston caliper. My pedal is great too i just have a longer throw and every now and this it gets kinda a mushy feel when the fluid heats up.

ok so I found the stock rotors and the calipers+brackets at a local salvage yard 25.00 each side for c+b and 20 for the rotors, now all I need are the lines. that is if the stock lines off the GP wont work. will they?

Stock brake lines will work, just be sure that the brackets for the front lines are bent enough not to keep the lines from traveling enough.

Hell ya, i rock those @ the track now!
gotta luv the fact that they're 8" wide, nice safe size for the 255.50 DRs ;)

Start scouring Crazy Ray's when you get the chance. $28.00 for both sides calipers and brackets out the door. :th_thumbsup-wink: It took me a few trips before I finally found mine, and I did have to pound the locking lug-nut off to get to them; there are folks that scavenge the yards and know what to look for. :th_shakinghead2:

Crazy Rays Used Auto Parts  U PICK IT!!   U PULL IT!!

Thats because rock auto and every other parts warehouse stocks the wrong part. Theres actually a post about that on clubgp lol. You just have to trust me on this one. Don't go to an auto parts warehouse off the internet unless its GMPartsDirect or the W-body store for this setup. Or of course look on car-parts.com and call the junk yard before you order the part.

I happened to be perusing RockAuto and discovered that Centric now offers the rotors! Part #12062091 for the front at $94.89, part #12062092 for the rear at $77.79. Still leaves the calipers out there, but it is a step in the right direction I guess.

Sweet thanks for letting us know about that. Yea i ended up using the ones i got from the junk yard and the surprisingly were in perfect condition!!!!

Ok, I understand everything about the fronts and 2 questions. 1 are you guys running the bolt shims or tap the caliper bracket.

2nd q is when i start the rears what part exactly am i looking for i read the whole forum but 1 person says this and another that. lol. If i go to the yard what specifc car's am i looking for. And at autozone what parts am i looking for... just trying to figure it out. Going to the yard this week.

I am also curious about the vehicles that have the brake we are looking for. Do the 3800 Firebirds and Camaros also have the F-Body brakes?

First off i would recommend not running the shims. I have them and am getting rid of them as soon as i can take the calipers to the machine shop.

Second you are looking for the Rear setup from a Grand Prix GXP. Im not sure about the Bonneville GXP setup and if it will fit. The calipers are a Single piston caliper made by PBR which is printed on the top of each caliper. they come painted/power coated red. The rotors for the setup are slightly smaller than 12 inches and are drilled. Also the parking break is compatible with no modifications:th_biggrin1:!!!! If you need a picture of the setup and what u need go to W-body store and look at their 12" rear upgrade. its the same exact thing.

Both cars are a F-Body cars so yes they have the front caliper that works with the Grand Prix. I know for a fact the 98-02 will work other than that im not sure. If anyone else knows chime in.

Like was said, you want GXP (2004+ are the years for them) brakes. However, if you manage to find that, then you definitely want the front setup as well!

+1. No shims! Either get the tap for <$20, or pay a machine shop to do it if you are not up for it yourself.

Any 98+ F-Body has the brakes needed for the front, regardless of engine.

Awesome guys. That helps i actually own a 85 camaro and i have done what they call the 1LE swap which is PBR's all the way around and might i add the 11.6 rotors do look alot and perform so much better. I just wanted to put some bigger brakes behind my 18"s. The 10.5 rotors do nothing for the thin spokes i have. I hate the huge gap between it...
