Engine transfer

I have a 99 grand prix gtp and the engine basically went bye bye. I have found an engine and transmission out of an 04 gtp. Is there somethings thats going to change for the transfer or are they basically the same? Any help with this will be majorly appreciated thanks!!

The transmission is different internally. The motor is basically the same but you'll need a tb adapter.

I've got almost the same question if someone could help me out please.

I've also got a 99 GTP but it's my trans that's bad, the motor is still good but has high miles, 200k. I was planning to have the trans rebuilt soon.

I also want to do some mods to the engine, headers, tune etc etc 3.4 pulley. Of course I'm a little concerned about trying to mod a motor with this many miles on it. I'm sure I'd be rebuilding it soon too if I do. I've read a little about swapping to a genV supercharger, and was curious if I could just get a junk yard engine/tranny with fewer miles from an 04+ and swap them both in at the same time? That way I'd have a better engine with fewer miles, and tranny too.

So from what I've read above, I could swap engines but I'd need a throttle body adapter of some sort. As far as the tranny goes, it's either not bolt in or not plug and play, or both? Does anybody have any links?

The biggest difference with the engine is the intake, the (04+) L32 has a better supercharger and uses a drive by wire rather than a cable throttle, so you'd want to get a different throttle body such as the Northstar and get a different MAF and the conversion adapter for the Northstar TB, then it would need to be tuned to run with that. That is the route I would go..

A method to direct swap would be to just take the block/heads and any accessories you need and then use your existing intake and supercharger. Not recommended because it would be a waste of time doing all that work and still sticking with Gen3 M90.

thanks to both of you.

Sco77, so you're saying you would rather go with a junkyard L32 with lower miles rather than mod or rebuild the L67?

you dont need a N* TB, you get an adapter plate to use the l67 TB on the gen 5 blower.

and a gen 3 on a top swap is more then enough, gen 5 aint all that in the end.

and junk yard engine is the cheap way to go, rebuilding these engines will cost in machine shop work, not worth it, as like dsmuts said hes modded a 200,000 mile engine. if its been taken care of they last a long time.

oh and a L32 will cost you more then a l67 or any N/A block at a junk yard or used off craigslist. the l32 will cost up to a grand. if you find it for under 500 god bless you.

Thanks for chiming in Scotty,

You said a Gen3 on a top swap is more than enough and a GenV isn't all that. I hate to be such a noob man, but what did you mean by that? I already have a Gen3, so what would I top swap? And I guess that you're saying the GenV blower swap may not be worth it?

Just to clarify; I got a bad trans in a high mileage car. I was planning for a rebuilt trans, then some struts/sways, then some engine mods. I was planning to go the 3.4 pulley route (and supporting mods) with my L67, but it occurred to me that I may be able to get a lower mileage L32 from a junk yard. I understand the stock L32/GenV has more power than the L67 and a better supercharger sound. but I didn't know if a stock L32 would be as powerful as an L67 with those mods. So that's why I was looking for swap threads and asking questions.

Just trying to learn my options and costs; and plan for a build. Even if an L32 would need a little help mod wise for extra power, maybe it would be worth the cost if the mileage was low enough. But that doesn't seem to be the opinion on here so far.

i was just clearing up the "need for gen 5 blower". if your were to top swap a gen 3 is more then enough on a high compression block. and you dont need a N* TB.

if rebuilding the tranny is in your budget, do that, then headers, pulley ect...

if its in the budget, you could buy a used block or engine, and work on modding it over time, then swap that built engine in. all new mods installed at once. ( and have the old engine as a spare) or sell it.

Btw, the car had high mileage on it when I got it. I don't know if it was taken care of or not before I got it. I wonder if it may have been previously modded and then de-modded. The guy I got it from said the supercharger had been rebuilt recently, and the snout sure enough didn't match the color of the housing. Then a little later, the supercharger went bad, sounded like the bearings were grinding. I got a used one from a junk yard, and put that one on. When I was finishing up and tried to put the belt back on, it wouldn't go on. I went to the parts store to get a new one and found the one I had was an inch shorter than it was supposed to be. So, I never did check to see how much of a shorter belt you get when you make a big enough change in pulley size, mostly because right after that the trans went out and it's been sitting since then. Soooo....

measure the pulleys on both supercharges. see if they are the same.

the snouts never match the case. they are always smoother and look like they would shine up real easy compared to the case.

my old car had high mileage and wasn't very well maintained when i got it but i modded it anyway and it held up perfectly fine. The snout will be a different color than the rest of the supercharger because the snout is painted from the factory where the rest is just aluminum.

Oh ok, I guess that's normal then. I did measure the two pulley's and they were the same size, so that's why I was thinking that it may have been demoded.

So Dsmuts, the one you modded with high miles is that the 98 GTP in your sig? You said it held up well, so I'm assuming it was wrecked and that's why it was scrapped, right? LOL

It was scrapped because of rust.

Oh wow, LOL. I guess the salt on the highway in Ohio?

Can we clear up the top swap thing Scotty was talking about? It's my understanding that a top swap is for those that have a N/A motor and want to go to a S/C. So I never investigated it since I'm already S/C. But Scotty mentioned high compression block, so is he talking about swapping my S/C and LIM etc onto a N/A block with the N/A heads to get additional compression? Can you do that? Man, I got a feelin that was a serious noob question. Sorry.
