dry ice intercooler

thinking about adding a 97/98 coolant overflow to my intercooler system so I can put dry ice in it for the drag strip. setup is a ported gen 3 m90 with a phenolic intercooler, ported L32 heads and an xp cam.

will the dry ice freeze the coolant?

anyone else done this?
 


I don't think it would work as well as you think it would. I would have the coolant flow through a radiator type container that you can put dry ice in and the coolant flows through tubes that are surrounded by dry ice. Kinda like that website has but with coolant going through where the air flows and the box like he has it. Hell I could make one from SST.

Rear mount the battery. Where it use to be make your container (start with alum battery box) and run your lines through it on the way back from inter cooler radiator. Just a thought.
 


Yes like I described that way you can either run dry ice or not, for the track you won't need a lot for each run. If you want I could draw you one up in Acad.

Years back I remember a guy mounting an ice chest in his spare tire well, ran his IC in/out lines to it. At the track he'd fill it with ice, it had a drain that ran through the drain hole that's there for the spare. I guess even for normal use you got extra cooling effect just from the length of the lines and the extra capacity of the system. Only downside is, depending on where you drive, a line could get cut or something if you don't have it routed/protected fairly well.

what's SST? my brain didn't compute what I read until I went and watched the video again, then it made sense. Why wouldn't it work very good?

Others have routed a 2nd heat exchanger into the trunk. Placed inside a cooler. Fill the cooler with ice water , and run a hose to drain it when it's melted.
Kinda cool to see condensation the IC core -'see cgp for more info

your original idea of just dumping the dry ice in the coolant tank, it will sublimate too fast and you would need a good vent to allow it to expand. I can't remember but I think it was like 400 times the volume from a solid to gas.

SST is short for stainless steel. I have lots of it at work. It could be made small enough to cool the coolant after the heat exchanger you already have.

I made a supplemental cooler using Peltier modules years ago and could drop the temp of 165* water down to 70* but it drew nearly 75 amps and you had to have another heat exchanger and pump so it wasn't really practical.
