Door Handle

Hello, I'm new here and I have a 1996 Grand Prix.

Right now it is pretty much stock with the exception of tinted windows, I plan on replacing the hood and the ody kit, but for now I'm having an issue with my door handle.

It broke and I have a replacement but I don't know how to go about changing it as it is the whole lack piece along the side of the window.

Has anyone done this before and can give me some advice?

Never done it before, but I would GUESS that it is an assembly that gets put in from inside of the door. So you would take off the panel, and replace the handle assembly from there. It shouldn't be that hard. If you get some pics of it we could help out more.

not on a GP but on any number of other cars --- and they're all pretty much the same.

You do have to take the door skin off (get new clips prior to starting -- you'll brake / lose the ones holding the door panel on now) Once off take a look and see what you're facing --- I doubt you'll be able to look squarely at it but if you reach up you'll find it. It'll have a rod or two connected to it that are held on by plastic clips. The clips push / roll off easily ater which you remove the rods from the handle. Once that's done find the two or three nuts holding the handle on. Reverse.

It's sort of a pain in the ass --- and first timers with it will certainly learn a lot --- but its not really a hard job to do. you'll also want to watch the sheetmetal of the door since it might just be rough cut openings. Getting the door skin on can also be aggravating --- but again, not hard.

good luck.

This handle does not mount to the outside of the door skin like 97 and up GPs.

Unfotunately my service info only includes engine and trans on this car.

Being that the handle is on the side of the window frame, and incudes a piece of outside trim, I am betting you need to start with putting the window down. Next, gently pull the rubber window channel away from the door frame. Just pull the end or side that has the handle. Once the rubber is out, it should simply push and pull into place, no adhesive, look inside the door where the rubber was, you should see some screws. Those are probably holding the handle and trim in place. Once the screws are out, it will probably be loose and make more sense.

Then you will probably have to remove the inside door panel to access the handle rods that open the door and disconnect those.

I saw a pic of the handle on ebay and it appears this way.
