Cracked Front Sway Bar

So went to a dealership today to get a recall item fixed on my 98 GP, and they performed an inspection in the process. Found a few things wrong including a cracked front sway bar.

I've done a little research and have found info stating it could be dangerous and then more info stating it shouldn't be too unsafe to drive on for a little while, just less grip in the front.

I wanted to get your input on this, as I'd like to wait a little while until I'm home from my internship in a couple weeks. Do you think this can wait? I'm not rough on my car at all. I take corners slowly and accelerate/brake easily.

I have had my sway bar off for about 8 months. No issues. and I drive crazy as hell. You will be fine. I have not even noticed a difference in handling at ALL.
 
Its not a safety item, it just reduced body roll, that is its purpose. You want to have it on there though, as it improves handling.
 
I had a front bar messed up (one end rusted off) for months, maybe years. It's safe to keep driving it. The dealer is looking for $$$$. Warranty work doesn't pay as well as regular service so they were trolling for $$$$. Easy repair for you to do once you get your new GMPP Suspension Kit (:D ).
 


Mine has been broken for about a year. I mainly just notice some extra body roll in corners and some noises over bumps some times. It is on my list of things to fix next week as I am going to order a GMPP set when I order a new front wheel bearing. Between the two I should notice a nice improvement.
 
when mine was cracked! i didn't even know it was! i guess when they replaced it (under warranty) it was in 2 pieces!
 


you will be fine with it broke unless it is completely snapped off with a sharp edge and somehow gets into your tire.............other than that you should be fine....I replaced mine in June(one of the two pieces that are welded together at the edges came apart from the other one and was disconnected from the rest of the swaybar...
 
I just installed the GMPP handling upgrade kit on my car. My front swaybar was broken as well so I decided to just go ahead and put the entire handling kit on it. The kit comes with Front and rear stabilizer bars, rear trailing arms, and a front strut tower control brace. It took me a weekend to do it and it was totally worth it. The car handles much better now and seems much more responsive. I got mine from paceperformance. However, they, and almost everyone else are out of the front swaybar. It seems that there is a national back order on them :(. After checking around for a bit Summit racing had a few left as of last week. That's where I get mine from. Also, if you get the kit be ready for some hard work. Some of the bolts can really be stuck on and it will take some pb blaster and time. Or, if your impatient like me you can use an acetylene torch and a breaker bar :th_winking:. The rear swaybar is a little difficult to finagle into place. Start with it upside down ( like the letter n) and parallel with the body. As you put it in place it will rotate to the correct position. Hope this helps.
 
for someone who has never really done any repair work on a car is this something that would be difficult? I feel I'm pretty mechanically inclined.
 
it isnt that difficult........the front swaybar literally is two bolts. The whole kit will take some time but I changed my swaybar with new poly bushings in twenty mins.... Just pay attention to the way the bushings are stacked before you remove them to get the new bushing stacks lined up correctly..........
