cooling off engine bay.

i can't believe there's isn't a thread about this (that i could find). this is my first run modding a GTP, i'm a little new to this, all cars before have been (turbo) hondas. car is a '00 GTP sedan Gold Edition, as it stands has a thrasher intake, zzp downpipe, zzp PCM, 3.4 pulley, MSD plug wires, custom Alt. wiring including ZZP stage 1 booster, 1.9 rockers, yellow GM springs, front log manifold. so when i got the car ZZP told me my intake temps where a little hot, about 115 degrees. so my first order of business was to cool down the engine bay. first thing i did was order some gold heat wrap from Summit Racing (Design Engineering DEI 010393 - DEI Reflect-A-GOLD Heat Barriers - Overview - SummitRacing.com) and wrapped my thrasher air box. second thing i did was order a 6"x6"x.025" teflon (Amazon.com: Teflon PTFE Sheet, .125" Thick 6" x 6": Industrial & Scientific) and made myself a throttle body heat barrier gasket. (i know it's after the IAT sensor) installed that along with 2 rubber gaskets (zzp). my third and latest mod was hood spacers and removing the rubber seal at the back of the hood. i got the brass (non rustable) spacers at Lowe's, they are 1" spacers, a little extreme but i'm all about function>form, and it still looks better than all the ugly ass hoods for these cars with the gaudy scoops and vents. here are a couple pics of the spacers , wrapped air box, and thermal gasket.

after going back to ZZP and having tim check the car again i had intake temps of 91 degrees on a high 80s day. not to bad if you ask me. soon i will be adding a fog light hole intake tube leading to the air box. updates later! give me some input!!!

So your hood sits up an inch? You dont think that looks gawdy? Buy an intercooler. Your intake box would look like a gift box if you put a little red bow on top.

the tilt hood is a honda thing my accord had a tilt hood it worked great car ran cooler and the h22 made some good numbers

I'd rather have an "ugly ass hood" with "gaudy scoops" that functions than having my hood sit an inch up and look like it's busted to the average every day person. just my 2 cents.

hmm.. I've seen intake temps of 130 on a 90F day. Maybe that would help me... better pic of hood?

also having "heat soaking" issues....

thought about removing the rubber strip along the back, but i thought someone later said this was in place to direct airflow out the bottom of engine and provide max cooling.. I also heard it made the blower louder :D

like i said, function>form. scoops look like ****, i'm not really into the whole nostril scoops, painted dash, neon lights, and ebay tail lights **** that most prix owners go for. IMO the lifted hood functions and looks a lot better then most hoods made for these cars.

i agree, btw how many washers did you use and did you have to replace the bolts to longer ones

i used a 1" brass spacer i found at Lowes, they also had nylon and steel.

Thank you for not being a ricer :p.
I kind of like the hoods though, but that's just my opinion.
IMO grand prix's are not aggressive looking cars, they have very smooth flowing body lines, so IMO a hood with 2 scoops sticking out the front looks extremely gaudy. these cars just do not look right with scoops.

Yeah I agree I wouldn't do it to my car, the scoops that go INTO the hood are alright, like the 40th anniversary style hood, or the simple heat extractors, but the ones with the big scoops sticking out of it look kinda funny.

I understand what you're saying, but I do believe the SD and the GTX hoods are quite attractive. The GTX hood has NO raise, the intakes are pretty subtle unless you're looking at the car straight on and actually paying attention. The SD hood isn't raised much, but enough to look different.
You could also go for the Cowl hood. You'd get your function and still maintain a pretty stock looking appearance.

All in all, it IS your car, and you should do what you want. I was just throwing out some suggestions.

You should take some daytime shots of your car, I'd like to see how the hood looks from a different view.

my intake temps with the stock hood location and no insulation other than stock with my FWI is only 5-20 degrees more than ambient. I guess mine works good enough for flow and temps as is....well at least as well as your mods anyway. I dont know what you had before for temp difference, but for me it would be a waste.

Sounds like alot of thought went into decreasing your intake temps. I am a little leary of the hood modification though. I hope it never decides to pop open on ya and fly up blocking your view. One thing I did notice. You still have the OEM air intake elbow on your TB. I wonder if you replaced that one with a solid smooth bore elbow and coated it with a ceramic paint, would that reduce intake temps even further. Just a thought.

haha funny you bring that up. today we will be making a hard pipe, heat wrapping it, and making another pipe for track use that will place the 4" velocity stack i just ordered right behind the head light hole. i'll also be removing the fog lights and running a air line from the drivers fog light hole up to the side of my air box.

Oh really, let me know how it turns out for ya. I used a K&N CAI kit. The kit came with a hard plastic intake tube I am thinking about coating it with a ceramic coating of some sort. It may help with high temps. It certainly can't hurt.
