Comp g toasted tranny confirmation question

Well, I was hoping my first post was gonna be more upbeat after lurking for a while. I just bought a 2004 Comp G with 154k on an impulse. No records at all and lacking maintenance but I thought it could all be fixed easily. Trans was feeling worn out so I did a pan drop. Fluid started coming out and I was immediately concerned. It was as black as oil in the catch pan. It didn't look that bad on the dipstick. I had a 10 quart pan and it completely filled it up which didn't make sense. Everything I read said it should have been around 8 at best. Cleaned it all up put the new filter back on. The pan had no shavings other than on the magnet. Put 2 jugs of Max Life dexron VI back in which filled it up even though that's less than what came out. Drove great for 2 days then came today. Was pushing pretty hard in 2nd gear and it made a loud bang that felt like something broke. Limped it the rest of way to work but could feel tranny slipping. So now it has reverse but putting it in drive does nothing. Might as well be neutral. If I use the tapshift it will go in 1st but slip pretty bad taking off. So I've resorted to manually taking off in 2nd which helps but it feels like its gonna die soon also. 2-3 shift is horrible and 3-4 is fine. So I'm guessing its toast right? I've been sick all day since it happened. Anybody want a 2004 Comp G?

I'm a bit confused on your story.

You took out ten quarts plus. Didn't this look a bit high on the dipstick?
You put in two jugs (likely gallons), what level did you fill to? Was it overfull on the dipstick?

I paid 2200 for my 04 with 134k

Yea that would be a deal around here. They normally list for 3500 to 4000 in average condition in this area. Far as the confusion in the other post, I filled it to the max line on dipstick. Which happened to be 8 quarts exactly but that's less than what came out. Obviously it was overfilled and contributed to its death I'm sure. I thought just doing a drain and fill would be safe but live and learn I guess.

Ahhh all good.

It should be safe. But if there was a ton of clutch material in it, that might have been the last bit of spit and glue holding it together.

Yea I def drained out the spit and glue considering it only made it 2 days with the new fluid. For any novice reading this thread with really old tranny fluid, please just leave it alone. I've shopped around for my options. Looks like 1500 for a rebuild, basix trans from TEP (which I really like) for 1500 or buying used. I have a question about finding a used trans tho. Do I have to find one that came out of a tapshift car or can it just be supercharged? Transmission guy kept tellin me that tapshift had nothing to do with trans itself.

Has to be tapshift yup sucks for us comp g owners. I rather get the rebuilt though that way you'll have a warranty. Used units are a hit or miss.. Yea you can install one and it might be fine at first then bam a month or 2 later transmission problems once again.

Well that def sucks. Only used I'm finding are close to my mileage and 750 shipped. I have a guy that will install for 300 but that still puts me over 1k and like you said it may only last a minute. So besides the 04 and 05 comp g trans is there any other models that had the tapshift that will work?

I want to say you can get the GXP trans to work but I don't think it's a direct swap. I rather save the $300 and do the swap yourself.. Yes Bill has made a write up that outlines a trans swap.

You need an 04-05 comp g trans gxp is a different gear ratio

Ok thanks, that really narrows it down. Tapshift doesn't seem so cool now, lol. Can't believe how bad this transmission is. Trans shop guy said he does one almost weekly. They gotta love these cars.

What do you plan on doing? Sell or fix? I'm in this situation as well....

Good question, I dont know right now. Guess it comes down to how bad you want the car right? My other car doesn't have a/c so I think I'm going to limp around thru the rest of this summer. Assuming it doesn't completely break before then. At that point maybe throw it on craigslist and if I get a decent offer I will sale. If I have to give it away I will keep and fix. There is a CompG near me for 3800 with more mileage and worse condition than mine (besides trans) so if I could get 2300 as is I'd be happy.
