Cold air intake Vs. stock intake (which is better?)

Do you honestly think, that GM would spend years upon years of engineering and R&D to produce an extremely restrictive intake system on their cars??

As previously noted the intake is a compromise of performace, cost, and "comfort", so yes, they would put a restrictive intake on it if it was quiet and cheap.

EDIT: And you want to talk about GM "engineering"? I have two words for you COOLANT ELBOWS.

^^ Agree Those coolant elbows on my old GP were sh***y. But hey at least they are easy to reach i think from what i can remember.

The only difference between a stock air box and an open cone air filter is noise. The stock air box is designed to be quite. The main reason a cone filter slightly out flows the stock filter is larger surface area. However, I still think its while to spend $50 and make one.

I ran a few intakes.

TDC FWI, TDC short ram/hot air, Open cone, ZZP CAI. Oh and stock then modified stock.

No real difference except when I went from a small beat up K&N filter to a rather large Amsoil filter.

a fwi or open cone style will be the loudest.

If you own a drive by cable car, the throttle body will make some nasty noise until it the engine warms up.

I recently heard that putting a cold air intake wont make any difference unless you change the exhaust from the engine back because that is still restricting.

Not sure why this is such a big debate let it die out....

Go whichever route you choose. I doubt your going to feel much of a difference between keeping the stock air box, or running a hai or a Cai. The potential few HP you will gain I guarantee you your not going to notice a difference. It's certainly isn't going to be the difference between going slow and breaking your neck with so much torque. Go other flow mods like headers etc. if your wanting to notice a difference.

Most of us are getting rid of the stock air box just to make our own intake and hear the whine more and clean up the bay a bit I doubt any of us serious modders are doing it because its suppose to add 3hp. Do a tune up and I'm sure you'll gain more then 5hp back.

^^^ Agree with above, this thread is kinda of pointless.

All you need to know about the Open cone intake is that its a cheaper way to make a CAI or HAI, makes better louder sound, and clears SOME HP. With other mods like headers and DP you should clear up a few HP like 5 combined with the other mods, and just makes the other mods and the car happier.
