Camshaft gear carnage

I'm demodding this weekend, so I go to pull out my cam, and this is what I find:

The top camshaft gear (where the chain rides) is cracked and bent, and the front cover has been gouged. The torx screws holding the thrust plate have been basically sheared off, and the thrust plate was obliterated. What the hell caused this?

i would think you had a clearance issue, but on the other hand, you just found your noise you've been looking for, haven't you?

i saw a vid a while back regarding the timing covers rubbing the timing gears. im not sure, but the newer year covers don't rub or something like that.

why are you de modding after all the time you just put into it?

Stock timing set.

I'm demodding because this car is non stop problems. I want a GTP to start with. I don't have the time or money to keep trying to fix and tune my car.

A gtp is going to do the same thing. I dont see one issue that's related to the car being a gt. Tunings not going to be any easier. The trans just as weak. Installing a cam is the exact same. Ect

I want to start fresh. I have more issues than just the engine. Suspension problems and body work as well. Plus I'd like the leather and sunroof. I'm already half way done my demod, I've bought the top end of my engine at Pick N' Pull, and I've committed myself. It sucks, but I'm sick of my car. I'm gonna probably trade my cam for rockers, since I can't seem to tune the cold starts for sh*t.

If it was seated properly and the retaining plate was secure, it shouldnt move. And using the stock setup should not hit the cover like using a double roller. I never seen that happen before on setup like yours. Makes me think of cam walk ;)

Couldn't find your pics of the timing set assembled. If you have them please post them.

I believe it was assembled incorrectly. No joking, you did some things up in the spring area that I still can't wrap my head around, because I see the taper of the locks and noticed how they sit when assembling my first time. One of the problems many of us seasoned guys have is that we say things are easy and figure the new to this guys will take pictures and notice orientation etc. That's what I think was the issue here.

For pressure to have been on stuff and those bolts to be ground. I'm wondering about which side fo the thrust plate was facing outward, which way the balancer gear was on the cam and which way the cam gear was on the cam. Something was definately out of place.

You put the gear down for a picture, with the side that faces the motor, facing us. Almost looks like a bolt washer mark on this side. The thrust plate screws .. odd that you got them out. They shouldn't have been sticking up at all. They sit flush in that plate. That would have made a heck of a racket.

Here's a stock setup.

Not the greatest pic.. Here's a plate in place. With the screws sitting flush.

I can't be sure of orientation of anything on there anymore. Maybe the thrust plate was backwards. So many pieces broke off it, the Torx screws were barely grabbing an edge of it. They were loose too. I just broke more thrust plate apart, and hand turned them out.

I'll need to look for sure. But I'm thinking the balance drive gear that sits on the cam if put on backwards may allow the cam bolt to pull things out of whack like this. I'll take a look tonight if possible.

Do you have pics of the balancer and balance drive gear on the cam shaft? If you didn't have a dot on it..I'd understand why. If the cam gear was on backwards..that I don't believe can do it. Something was out of place though.

Honestly. I'd leave the cam in. I'll send you the parts you need and you can get it all back together. The springs, this piece..there's no reason to give up and sell it now. You are 99% of the way there and have learned a ton along the way. it's still going to run.

I definitely had a dot on the balance shaft gear, cam gear and crank gear. I lined them all up. I'm already ready to buy nice GTP. My tranny is failing, my suspension is loose, my car has ugly rust, I'm just tired of it. I've basically got the engine back to stock now. It's no biggie.
