Bypass VAT with resistor?

Paranoid

New member
So my car wouldn't start. The wire for the security system in the ignition cylinder broke, I fixed it, it runs, whatever. But I'm almost certain this is a temporary fix.

Somewhere I came across someone saying to cut the wires and put a resistor in between them, essentially making the VAT useless. I can ohm the key to find the right resistor and I am more than capable of doing it, but before I go doing things that could potentially disable my car completely, I was wondering if anyone has heard about this, or if anyone has advice about it.

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: It's a (sexy) 96 Grand Prix SE, sorry I forgot to mention that.

he's got a Vats key.

Here's my take on it. Who is aiming to steal our cars, around my area...not a single person. I soldered my resistor directly into the wiring right at the BCM and unplugged the VATs connector halfway down the column. You may not have a connector. Doesn't really matter where you solder it, as long as its a good connection.

98-02 F body guys do this all the time. As a matter of fact I did this on my 02 as a temporary fix.

I finally got the balls enough to do it. Works fine. I just did it under the steering column, because I figure if it ever breaks, I can just hold it together to start the car so I'm not stranded (again).

Thanks a lot guys!

82-92 F body guys do it like its there job.... just need to check the resistance of your key then add resistors that equal that to the system in the car...and do ur self a favor and make 2 sets the tend to burn out over time. my 92 Camaro started with out a key after after i did this tho so if someone being able to start the car with a screw driver makes u nervous wire in a kill switch
