every car has a reserve of 100 miles in the tank when the light comes on, thus leaving at least 3 to 4 gallons in the tank when the light comes on.
Just to be clear not every car is that way but the grand prix's are.

after a certain year all cars pretty much got a low fuel light, that light was intended to let you know you have 100 miles left. not just GM but all cars. iirc it was some kind of law/ruling so they had to make it that way.
i dont know of may cars or trucks with out a low gas light these days.
not that the light is 100% accurate, every cars fuel float/sender is different in the long run. even same cars side by side will be different.
