best motor oil

I run Schaeffer's 15w-40 7000 blend in everything except my ATVs. I think the last barrel I bought was $400-500, so that puts it at about $3-4/quart.

Taking your car in for oil change should be a simple task, but that isn't always the case. Beware some places are all about cost cutting, they will use the cheapest quality oil and oil filters that they can buy. I took my sister inlaw's car in and they put on a filter that was smaller than oem size filter. Because of crap like that folks change their on oil. You should be concerned about the kind of oil they are using and the kind of filter. There have been some problems reported with some brands of oil filters. Purolator oil filters have a very good reputation.

I used to use Royal Purple, But noticed it would majically "evaporate". Id lose about a litre between oil changes in my Denali. no leaks, no sweats, nothing. And its not burning oil, as it hasnt done it with any other type of oil. I also noticed alot of bubbling with royal purple. id run my engine for a few minutes, turn it off and check the oil and there would be visible bubles in the oil on the dip stick.

I have switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic and I havent had any of the issues at all. No bubbling, no oil "evaporating" lol.

It was a tough thing for me as I was a huge Royal purple fan. Used it in everything I owned. Unfortunately just over the past year or two I started noticeing things. Does anybody know if there was a formula change or ownership change or something with Royal Purple??

My 01' I got when she had just 35k on it... I will use whatever oil is available, changed at proper intervals and never going over 5,000 miles between changes tops!

In addition, with each change I've used a synthetic additive called "prolong" and can honestly tell you that even though she is tired now with 196k, she starts right up, is clean inside and you can't hear any lifter tapping yet too. I think anything works well as long as you make sure you do it regularly.

With my recent purchase (00' GTP - 86k miles) I'm thinking i might just switch over to synthetic like mobile1 ... Same cost as adding the prolong, not sure about it but thinking its just easier. Can tell you though, when adding the prolong you can actually hear the engine smooth out and quiet a bit.

Lol, or maybe its just a induced effect by creative advertising!

Regards
:)

I use Castrol GTX high milage part synthetic. I figured it's the best of both worlds. It comes in a cool looking green jug too :D

The oil isn't evaporating - it's burning.

This is normal in LS based engines (like in my GTO - GM sent out a bulletin warning me to check the oil level at every gas change). Google oil consumption and you will see what I mean - it's normal for aluminum engines.

My GTO will consume about a quart per 3000 miles. It has an LS2 engine. This is normal - it's burning - you're just not seeing it...

I wasn't aware the 6.0l Vortec Max was an LS engine. And I find it strange it only did it with the Royal Purple and not at all since I switched to mobil 1. I would lose a ful litre between oil changes with RP. With the mobil 1 I have yet to see it leave the full line on the dip stick.

Trucks have Iron Blocks...yes, they are Gen III/IV motors, but your reasoning behind the oil consumption issues with the LS motors is because of the way the stock pistons are manufactured, not because aluminum blocks burn oil...that makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever. My LS3 drains almost the exact same amount of oil I put in, even after 5k miles (there's obviously some still in the motor, since it is impossible to drain it all).

Also, Royal Purple is the worst thing you can put in your motor/trans/rear. Read my previous post on the first page.

To me, a quart in 3000 miles isn't bad at all. I consider it normal, even if it's a new engine. This 3.8 is the first motor I've ever had that didn't use a quart in 3000.

Yeah... A quart of oil every 3,000 miles seems like a lot of oil being burnt.

Most definitely! Worn rings? Or some other form of blowby burning oil... Bad head gasket? A quart loss at 3,000 miles is something that requires attention IMHO not just adding more oil. Have you done a compression test? Just asking and sorry to go off topic :)

Could be a worn out gunky PVC valve. My son's Impala was burning oil like that and a new one solved the issue. If incorrect pressure builds up inside the crankcase it forces tiny amounts of oil past the rings and out your exhaust. it's not enough to smoke and after a few thousand miles you could be a quart or two low.

I've been using that "new" Mobil1 0W-30. Seems to be working great... engine is running nice and clean and have noticed a tiny MPG improvement in city mileage.
