Anyone have experience with clear coating?

I've given up the search for polished 5 spoke rims for my gp. I have some now on my 97 but they are stock white. my question is, if i strip all the paint off of these rims, do i clear coat my wheels? Will the clear coat hold up? I know it's a lot of work to get them looking like stock polished ones but i'm just curious to know if anyone has ever attempted this? i want polished aluminum, not painted. Thanks!

I have never clear coated rims but I would imagine they would be the same as any other alum. I think the hardest part of the process would stripping the paint without damaging the metal under. Time and patience and a dremel are all you need to polish.

Because of the polishing chemicals that are used to polish the metal it's very hard to clear over it. I'm sure it could be done. But i'm also sure powdercoating it would be easier. And possibly baking a clear over a chrome. Maybe having the same affect?
