Another Lowering on Coils Thread

Before anybody jump's and says "Search is your friend" I've searched, and I can never seem to find the answer to the question's I've had about dropping my Grand Prix on it's guts.

I read Randall's write up on his Home Made Coilovers 100000000000 times. And I thought that was going to be the route I was going to take in lowering. But I'm managed to get asking myself, how can I go low, and add a little camber. And then I thought "is there any other coil over option out there (for another platform) that is either a Direct bolt on for these car's or with minor mod's can be installed.

Only reason I ask that, is I'd like to have a camber plate ontop the strut, and there's really no such thing for a grand prix. I've heard of just making the upper hole in the strut bigger for alignment adjustment, but I don't think that's going to give me the degree's of camber I want.

So is there another option? That's a bit cheaper than buying a full set made for the w-body platform, Or am I just going to have to make my own set of coil's and make due. I do like the height I've seen some people's car's get by being on coils, and making a set of bag's and buying management isn't in my financial bracket.

So if anybody has any input on this. It would be very helpful

Re: Getting lowered... Once Again.

You could go to a local machine shop and have plates made...

That's how much things happen.

You could Intrax springs...they still make them, and they drop the car quite a friggen bit. Like, close to 3" after all is said and settled. You'd have to look for them under a Buick Regal...but it's all the same stuff.

Re: Getting lowered... Once Again.

Sorry, but i should have mentioned i'm not planing on use lowering springs. I'd rather have the adjust ability with coils. As for a local machine shop.... The closest thing we have to that is the High school, and all they have is a few Arc and Mig Welder's and 2 machine lathes. And school's been out for a while now.

I read somewhere that Coils off a Lexus (I can't remember the model, or who said it) fit the gp's with minor mods. But I googled it, searched it everywhere, and I've never come across it.

Re: Getting lowered... Once Again.

Yeah, I've never heard that before.

Maybe Dave can shed some more light on it.

*Drunkie.

Re: Getting lowered... Once Again.

If that's the case...

My front coilovers for my cobalt were damn near idential to my GP stuff...only thing that would need to be swapped out would probably be the mount as you said...everything else was adjustable and would've probably been a close fit.

Re: Getting lowered... Once Again.

Well as in reading Dave's Coilover Confessional thread. There's mainly 2 types. Full setup or Slip over. Everything is slip over for these car's, but something with a full setup would be badass, which is what i really want. Slip over's only allow the car to go as low as the strut itself allows... Which isn't enough. After seeing KillerSpeed's ZZP coil's nearly maxed out. I just think you could get lower still on static.

Re: Getting lowered... Once Again.

I'm sure you could.

The only issue you run into then...is correcting mount/axle geometry to avoid wobble at acceleration and premature mount/axle failure.

Re: Getting lowered... Once Again.

How low are we talking? This affects what you can get away with in a setup.

as low as you want.

but the lower you go, the more work it is.
THIS, when im near bottomed out i can feel my axles beg for mercy.

itll change the axle geometry, allowing you to go lower without screwing it up as much.

however, going low you're going to have other issues from the get go (like rubbing, scraping, bump stop pounding, etc.). how many "low" cars have you driven? because i hit my bump stops all the time, scrape my bumper all the time, and rub my inner fenders all the time. can you handle that?

x2 .Im pretty much riding on the bump stops,

this is going to be harder for you to get lower. they dont take to being dumped well.

to do it right while staying static (do bags....do it) you're gonna have to figure out some shorter strut that you can put on the car before you put the sleeves on. or figure out a coilover from another car that can be worked over to fit, like you said.

either way, nothing sold for the car will get you what you want.

I did some searching around for some coilovers off of other cars when my bags were giving me a headache. Its somewhere in my thread I think and I'll go look for it, but I never heard about the lexus ones. I even emailed bc and asked if they could look for some based off of some measurements I took from the mounts and told them it was for a custom project but they didn't search for me. I was also going to just go to the junkyard and checkout all the different cars. There has to be something that'll work and I'd like know myself. Let me go search real quick for my notes to took
