advice on tranny pan drop/filter change-trannyman?

I have a 98 GTP that I bought about a month ago with just over 100k on it. I am trying to go through it and change out some of the fluids and wanted to do a tranny pan drop and fluid refill(not flush) I have purchased the Amsoil ATF to go into the tranny as replacement fluid and was wondering if I should get a new GM tranny filter to go on there or what type of filter should I get. I just want a high quality one and not as concerned about price as long as it is not outrageous. Please give me advice on what type of filter I should be using. The vehicle is mostly stock except for a few bolt ons. Tranny is stock as far as I know. Thanks in advance..........

Just get one for a auto parts store. Dont use the included cork gasket unless your metal / rubber one is toast.

Make sure your tranny fluid is dex III

Re: advice on tranny pan drop/filter change

I am planning on reusing the tranny pan gasket as I believe it is fine. The tranny fluid is going to be amsoil. I was just wondering what tranny filter to use. I know there are differences between the cheap motor oil filters and the better ones and wanted to see if the same held true with the transmission or if they are all exactly the same. I would be willing to pay a little more if it is better quality...........

I am using amsoil..............which says it is dex compatible. yes dex VI is what everyone is using because it is an updated version of dex III and it is compatable with dex III........

As long as the filter is made in the US you should be fine. I typically use SPX Filtran filters which I believe is also what comes in the AC Delco wrapper but it has been a while. There are chinese filters out there that dont fit as well and I have heard of issues with them so avoid using those. Pretty much any filter service kit is going to have one of two filters, and the Filtran filter is one of them

so this filtran filter should be available through my local auto store I assume?

Trannyman, how are the WIX filter in your opinion? Thats what i've been using for years. They seem to be made pretty good, I break mine apart ever pan drop to check the contents...

just curious....

Most aftermarket filter kits dont have that actual name brand on the filter itself. The only way to know what you really have is to look at the steel shell stamped on the filter and look for the manufacturer logo. I have never bought a WIX filter for one of these transmission so I dont have any knowledge of them, but all US made filters that I have used clearly have made in USA stamped on them.
