ABS/Trac Off Lights on

My ABS and Traction control off light came on the other day and now comes on nearly everytime I drive it. Has my ABS module gone bad? Any other common things cause this?

We need a sticky for this problem since it comes up so often. 99% of the time it is a bad speed sensor on one of your four wheel bearings. With a scanner that can read ABS codes you can find out which one in a few seconds.

If you have a regular OBD II scanner like Autozone uses, it will not read ABS codes. My mechanic has a Snap-on scanner that will read ABS codes so I have him read it for me to find out which one I need to replace.

:th_thumbsup-wink: I actually have this same problem and I went to the dealership ( becaue there wasnt a shop in town that had a reader that would read my 04 Grand Prix thier readers ONLY read up to an 02) but it came back as a BAD driver side hub assmebly !!!

Dealership got me for 100.00 bucks for 10 minutes of work. Also quoted me almost 600.00 to replace but husband fixed total cost 88.19 for hub assmebly Labor zero !!
That dealership TRIED to get over on me !!! lol Luckily husband can work on cars !!
HOPE THIS HELPS !!!!!

I found a place to scan the codes for no charge! Was the right front wheel throwing the code. Since it had some play in the bearing also, I didn't hesitate to replace the hub. Got a Timken hub/bearing for 107 from rockauto and put it in. Still had the friggin ABS light on. Found there is an issue with the harnes and dorman makes a replaecment harness. Back to rockauto for 27 bucks. In the meantime, doing the LIM gasket on my daughters car, so haven't installed the harness yet.

If your hubs are good it could be a broken wire in the harness. This happened to me.

where would i check for broken wires? ive checked the large connection on the main control unit under the hood. Should i follow those wires and see if any are broken or what?

I had the same problem with my 98 GT. Replaced the front right hub and the light came on in about a week. I looked closer at the connection and it had some play so I took a small zip tie and put around the connection. That cured it. I didn't feel like replacing any harnesses.

Follow the harness from the sensor on the hub to the main harness in front of the engine.

I have a 1999. I believe that the 2000 is different - I'll post my pics in a seperate thread. My harness from the Speed Sensor connector to the enginer wire harness is bad and I cannot find a replacement. I have checed all the typical places and even the dealer isn't sure where they can get the part. Any help would be helpful.
