You are both right Einsteins. If you think about it there is no argument here.

Fixed it for you!. Turbos HAVE changed, its all in the technology.
Fixed it for you!
Never heard of Billet turbine wheels? Billet housings? Twin scroll? Variable Vain? Drilled housings to reduce surge?
Turbos are night and day better than they were say when the GNX came out!

This, this, and this again. There is a guy out in Arizona who sells turbo kits for the 3000GT/Stealth market. (I'm pretty sure he tunes Lamborghini's too, but that's besides the point) Anyway, 10 years ago people thought a 15g turbo was thought to be great and it maxes out around 500 awhp. There is a new turbo he designed thats in a stock housing that has made over 600 awhp on a car that looked like it had a stock engine bay.
He has another set up that he is running on his car that is making over 1000 awhp and has run a 8.74 @168.5. He's done that WITHOUT spray.
So yes, turbo technology has changed drastically, even in the last 10 years.
honestly, i really don't see any reason that any engine coming out shouldn't have a turbocharger. it's free power when you need it and makes such a more drastic difference in fuel mileage than the DOD or VVT systems.
direct injection is the best thing to happen to cars in a very long time. vvt... meh. but the added complexity is significant. couple that with GM's infamous oil life monitor and you have a recipe for stretched timing chains.I don't know...direct injection with VVT is impressive as far as power and economy.
free power sir. the initial investment is quite large. but hell, a cruze is 28k these days, who cares?Turbos are free? Wheres mine then.
engine efficiency these days is still haning out around what, 25%? just makes sense to me to use some of have the ability to use some of the energy when needed. i do see your point though, being nice to mine i'll see high 20's mpg when NA port fuel injected cobalts can see into the 30's.How is the power free?
They're not perfectly efficient, thus cost power.
Costs much less power compared to a roots blower, and at much higher pressure ratios than most blowers, but regardless, they still are not perfectly efficient.
agreed on it being slow, and i'll add that it's terrible to drive with the 6-speed transmissions going in it.A Cruze is also ugly and still slow even with a turbo.
