98 GT Gear Shifter Lights

I was wondering why the letters right by the gear shift dont light up. None of the P R D 1 2 3 N light up red like I see in so many pictures. Could it be a fuse?
 


mine dont either. thinking the bulb might be out. thats my best guess. i dont think there would be a fuse JUST for that,
 
I can say that it does light up, because mine does. To get at it though, not sure, never tried pulling apart my center console before.
 
i bought a decal for that part since mine went to crap. i cant remember what i did. open the center storage box, take out the tray (mine lifts right out), then i just pryed and pulled up in the center piece carefully eventually getting it out and was able to access the whole shifter assembly. i went into it not knowing anything so it isnt to hard. just have to give it a try. took me no more than 5 minutes or so.
