2008 Grand Prix oil loss

Replace the crankshaft seal, I've never had a car with moderate to high mileage not need the crankshaft seal replaced. Its too cheap not to do it.

how cheap is it to pull the engine or drop the tranny? cause thats what needs to be done to change the rear seal.

nothing is leaking. I really don't want to spend over 500 to get this fixed. cause if its over that im just gonna get rid of the car.

nope i dont. idk. i will be getting it looked at on monday by 2 different shops. then it comes down to the decision if im keeping the car or not. if it costs too much to fix im just going to buy a newer car. (2008 Pontiac G6 GXP)

I'm talking about the Crankshaft pulley seal, or harmonic balancer seal, which is behind the front passenger tire, and the pulley sits right behind a plastic shield. Undo the belt, remove pulley, remove/replace seal. Fairly straight forward, no need to drop an engine or tranny at all.

got ya, he posted after all that and said it was dry. not leaking.

FYI, im a girl ;] haha. and i havent gotten it looked at because the guys at the shop wouldnt take my car yet. ughh..

DONT JUST REPLACE CRANKSHAFT SEAL OR BALANCER SEAL. Every seal leaks with age and miles, if your going to fix it get it looked at first. Valve cover gaskets are common problem area on 3800 motors, I would look there first.

Oil is cheap, you won't won't spend $500 in 5 years adding oil.

im making an appointment next week friday. i have to get in touch with the mechanic that will be taking a look at my car

I second the valve cover gaskets, by far the most common place to leak oil on these engines, and it won't always show up on the bottom since they can leak onto the exhaust manifolds and burn off. Plus it's hard to actually see the rear VC to tell if it's leaking. The gaskets are cheap and can be done pretty quickly.

If you or the shop does replace the valve cover gaskets make sure they use new grommets under the bolts, because the bolts pressing on those grommets is what presses the valve cover down, not the bolts themselves. New gaskets without the grommets will leak again in a short amount of time.

The front valve cover is where you pour the oil in, just in case you aren't aware.
