Guess she heard a humming, then a growling, then a horrible grinding. Pedal pressure fell off when she was pulling off that main road. Traffic was clear, luckily.

We'd just discussed that she'd read calipers can loosen on drilled and/or slotted rotors. I assured her I used Goku strength on all bolts. The missing tube of red loctite wouldn't matter because breaker bar, I said.

Well, it did f%&^ing matter because Jesus Balls what a close call. I wanna laugh at how subtle and stupid it is, but the bottom line is that I took a risk. A risk that was careless and moreover, needless. Please, learn from this. It could've been much worse than a scratched caliper.

I mean ..sh*t, man ..my kid rides in that car. :th_nervous:

I dunno what to say besides, what a somber moment. :th_cigarsmoker:

I've never used loctite on caliper bracket bolts. I always impact them on and never had one come off.

I don't think the pad/rotor combo would make it any different, just bad luck.

I'll be in there tomorrow to poke around and check all four corners. That other bracket bolt was loose too, just not as loose. Gotta see if there's any other damage.

Glad everyone's OK man. Hopefully no significant damage. I will soon be buying rotors myself, so I Googled this phrase "calipers can loosen on drilled and slotted rotors" and didn't really find anything about it. Got to page 5 of the results, which is deep, lol. I would be interested in reading about this.

I never use red on the bolts either, and the rotors used shouldn't really matter. Glad nobody was hurt, post your findings.

Glad your ok. I never use loctite on brake stuff. I seem to damn near have to round off the bolt to get them out sometimes. If I were to try some I would lean towards blue. Red is a SOB to take off. Was it the caliper bolt or bracket bolt that backed out?

I have air tools. Not enough space in garage with all the winter crap in there, bleh.

Well, I wasn't ready to talk physics last night. Walked the road a bit later and again this am looking for that bolt. Couldn't find it.

Been to the garage too, after remembering two distinct possibilities. Less likely is that there's been a slight shudder when backing and turning right since we bought it. I lifted the front, turned wheels to lock both ways and couldn't replicate. It must shake under effort ..but enough to vibrate a caliper's bolts out? Probably not. May test with a helper wheels on the ground.

I'm %93 certain that when I did that side, I used a deep impact socket and small extension for the breaker. There's creeping intuition that the tool may have bound. No marks from quick inspection. Gonna try lining tool back up and see later.

Good info. I'll check because the stock ones don't have red where the bolts touch.

The powerstop ones might.

If the powdercoat or paint cracked and flaked off in between the mating surfaces, that would have caused a gap when it fell out during normal road vibrations and made it instantly loose.

I've seen something like this once before, but with an old wheel... It was a demo derby car that had "painted" steel wheels put on because aluminum isn't good for repeated crashing. The paint turned out to be about 8 layers thick, and cracked when the lugs were tightened down.

Needless to say, the wheels came flying off in spectacular fashion halfway through the race.

I just ordered some Powerstop Impalas last night.

I tap them tighter with a 5 pound mall and half inch socket wrench after wiffing on them.
Last time I used red loctite and wasn't looking forward to tapping them out with the mall. It was bad enough disassembling with the stock fastener juice.

I will definately file the powder coat off the inside bolt ears and use blue loctite this time.

The rim essentially looked like this when I arrived. The upper bracket bolt fell out. The caliper tipped forward on the lower bolt, hitting the rim. (from google images)

The only mark on the rotor. Not sure what it is, haven't cleaned it. Doesn't feel like a gouge. More like melted pad.

Got a bolt and cleaned everything up.

Checked driver's front. The lower bolt was also loose. Like, set the tool on and pretty much spun on its own, loose.

Blue threadlocker applied to front bracket bolts and pins. Haven't put loctite on pins before, but has powder coat there too.

Rears tomorrow. I am adding this issue to my review for the product for sure.

Measured and the stock one's 28". Anyone fit a longer one? There's some (advertised) real quiet resonators for trucks at 30 inches.

Edit: I searched high and low for 2.25" resonators. There's a link/list at the end of the actual repair.

Thought of trying to fit a short can between the O2 and resonator flange. The pipe's all wonky, and I'm not certain it's advisable cus of the 02 anyhow. Meh..
