Re: 1997 Black GTP, Quicky Update.

I know this is a couple days late, but you may look on the underside of the hood, along the air channel. See if there are divets in the hood along the air channel, they will be small, but should be there assuming it was made right. What is suppose to happen is along the way inside the hood there should be a couple tiny holes drilled in the bottom of the air channel to allow water to drop out before it gets to the air box. This is how the ram air in the Maros and T/As were back in the glory days of the F-Body. If they weren't drilled out or just painted over, it should result in a divet that can be seen, otherwise... i dunno

Give it a check over, if you can't find anything out it may be a thought to consider. You will lose all function of Ram Air if you move the filter to the inside of the fender well. Altho, being boosted, Ram Air is over-rated on these cars because it won't really gain function until your going much faster than you should ever be in a GP lol.

Hifonics Brutus class D. I'm getting one soon. My friend had one of those with 1000rms on a ported 15 in type r and he was doing paper tricks with it.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Quicky Update.

Sheff, my car is no racekar so i might just move the filter towards the fender to avoid this problem.

Also, i picked up a 2-channel 1800 watt Kenwood Kac-7202. Puts out 850rms at 2ohms & has a built in fan. I wired the sub down to 2 ohms but i also turned the gain down about 1/4th to keep the sub safe. So the amp is only using 3/4th of its full potential but damn, does this single 12 Type R hit good. Ill get more pics of the full setup later, i need to still buy a 2 Farad Cap and then mount the amps to the box and rewire everything with better wiring and what not. Right now its just a complete mess.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, She's Got Some Bump.

how many volts did you set the gain to?

and imo i think that type r should be completely fine with all of 850watts. many ppl give then 1000+ and still fine after being beat on.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, She's Got Some Bump.

Well i have been using some pretty crappy & small wiring and it didnt work out so well. The amp stopped working due to the crappy wires (i believe) so i bought 3 feet of 8 gauge wiring, for the power and ground and also bought a 2.0 Raptor Farad Cap. Once i get that in the mail friday or saturday, i will re-wire both my amps, speakers, and sub all nicely and with better wiring so hopefully everything will be working amazing. I just unhooked the kenwood amp for now since its not working at the moment anyways.

Just a tad nervous about charging the Farad. Never installed a farad before, so therefore, i have never charged one either. Hopefully everything comes out good and is up and running correctly by saturday.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, She's Got Some Bump.

Farad is a unit of measurement. Also capacitors are awful and ruin alternators. Send it back or sell it.

That said, just do a big 3 upgrade, and run 4ga wire for power and ground. Also use OFC not CCA for wiring. All these little things will add up and make a huge difference. 850rms shouldn't need a capacitor, or any other sorts of "real" upgrades other than a big 3. If you fuse your power wire properly you should be good too. Make sure the fuse on the power wire is no higher than the combined fuses on the amp (if you have more than one).

As far as keeping the sub safe, tune your gains properly. If you had a blank CD, and a multimeter, and a basic calculator, you're good to tune.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, She's Got Some Bump.

Ive decided to make myself a fender well intake b/c im sick of this SD hood taking in water through the air channel and getting my filter wet everytime it rains, so my engine takes in water. So im going to throw the filter into the fender. As i was looking, i saw this stupid brace in the way of where i need to go. What do people do with the brace to get around it or remove it to have the filter fit in the fender? Also, will i need the smaller spectre air filter from autozone? As of now i have the big cone, not sure if that will fit in the fender either.

Damn brace:

Re: 1997 Black GTP, FWI Advice, Real Quick.

Thats fine, i just need to figure out how to do this with the damn brace in my way. Stupid GP

Re: 1997 Black GTP, FWI Advice, Real Quick.

just shove it in the dam hole...LOL... I think I heard about having to cut it out

Re: 1997 Black GTP, FWI Advice, Real Quick.

If memory serves well I believe there was a discussion on this a long while back, you need the smaller filter and have to do some cutting to the brace to allow the turn down. I'll see what I can find.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, FWI Advice, Real Quick.

Nope nope nope... I was wrong. sorta. Can be done with the Spectre 9" Filter, but some modding will be in order.

http://www.grandprixforums.net/make-4-fenderwell-intake-fwi-3-20.html

After doing my intake I found that the instructions were lacking a few details. Here are some things that may make it easier to make the intake.

1. I used white lithium grease to help the PVC pipe fit onto the rubber elbows.
2. A 1/2 inch drill bit works perfect for making the hole in the intake that air sensor plugs into.
3. When I got my PVC pipe I could only get it in a 10 foot length. I got mine at Men@rds and even though it was 10 feet in length it was still only $7.00.
4. I used a 12" conical air filter so I had to modify the instructions slightly. 14" for the longest piece, two 45 degree elbows, and a second 3 inch section.

I hope this helps anyone else who is thinking of doing this. With this communities help and little elbow grease its amazing what you can do.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, FWI Advice, Real Quick.

Yeah this is what i want ^ but i was just going to use some intake tubing from ZZP since it can bend, but this doesnt say anything about the brace.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, FWI Advice, Real Quick.

I think you'd be fine with the ZZP tubing because it's flexible.

Silly goose, you didn't read any of the posts in the thread I linked. Checkout post #50 and see what you can find. ;)
