Re: 1997 Black GTP, The Final Project.
Update time, kinda.
Last week I went to Josh's house to get my car tuned. Car pulls hard with the setup. We tuned for about 4 hours straight, in 90* weather, beating the sh1t out of it. Engine and trans were both around 200 degrees, completely heat soaked and we couldn't get the car to knock at all, which is great. Running an 11.1 AFR @ WOT with 14* timing. At 15* timing the car sees about 2 degrees of KR but I'd rather be KR free. With a Gen V on a 3.4 at the top of second, right before the shift, the car sees 10.5ish psi. So the car is flowing very well.
Started to attempt my own body work. First time ever, so this all is a learning process.
This was before:
Really had to get this metal covered up before it started to rust. Made the huge mistake of taping off the surrounding area, so there is a tape line now, but not to concerned at this point, just looks better than before:
Then started working on the gas cap area. It started to rust again, and lots of bubbles underneath it. Don't have a before picture, but it looked nasty. This time I tried to blend. Came okay for my first time, and body work isn't easy to get to look perfect. I can see why it's expensive.
Taped off just the area for the primer:
Attempting to blend:
What it looked like with overspray all over the fender, before wet sanding:
Lots of wet sanding and buffing, this is how it turned out. Like I mentioned before, wasn't even close to perfect, but looks better than rust and bubbles:
Also fixed up around the wheel well, rear drivers side as it was missing paint and rusting:
Then started working on repainting the Front Air Dam, as that was in awful shape:
Primed:
Just the black painted:
Working on the silver middle part, used the stock color code for this, WA8945:
Cleared:
Car without Front Air Dam:
Quick mock up with the Air Dam back on before wet sanding:
Wet sanded and buffed the Air Dam, isn't quite as "shiney" as I'd like it too, but still looks much better than before. It's ready to be installed again, but I'm leaving for an Alaskan Cruise tomorrow morning for a week. Which also means I'll be missing the big meet in detroit, which really sucks, but this is a once in a lifetime trip I got for free.
All in all, I'm not too upset with my first time body work job. It's pretty difficult to blend the paint and have it look perfect. Everything was done with my finger and a rattle can as well. So can't be too upset with how it came out.
