[10-09-2013 ] 3800 swap&topswap Complete!

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Only asking because with headers I found my otherwise stock L36 pulled nicely compared to manifolds.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

I'm sure it did make a diff. The only really mod I have on the l36 right now are the headers. My DOHC never got much gain from exhaust until I started really porting the intake manifolds. My DOHC would match a GTP off the line with the 3.73 gears then would Pull ahead on e in its powerband at 4400-5300 and I would be shifting 1-2 at 6300 and 2-3 at 6800. So since this l36 pulls stronger down low then the DOHC, it must be equal to if not better then a gtp off the line. Just don't have the steam when rolling yet...

Oh btw. I'm getting flack on clubgp a out porting my m90! It'd the funniest thing. All I did was list what I did and plan for the car like I did in his thread. One says I'll ruin it. The other says these no point! Some times I just hate that place.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

how are you porting it?

Just a word of advice, you'll want to spend a significant amount of time on the inlet as well.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

for the outlet i am gonna use a Sawsall to cut the V where it has the bolt bosses. i figure it will give me a straighter cut and much faster then the dremal. and yes i do plan to do work on the inlet. i will be matching up a northstar tb to it and smoothing it out for a nice transition.

i had a ported Gen 3 before that i got with a 98 GTP. i ended up parting out. i tried using a diff gen Northstar on it... i cant remember but i think the IAT was diff. i never looked into if it would work or not as i ended up getting a newer N* that had a plastic housing for the MAF. I really dont like this type of TB as it doesnt have as smooth a transition as the N* in the pics bellow. Also that M90 was the ported blower that was on the car and what killed it in the first place... well a ported blower with a 3.25" and no supporting mods... but from the look of it the outlet was over ported and went with too wide an opening. here are pics:

Ok so my build up of parts is complete. I still have plenty of porting left to do but i figure i'll post up some pictures of what i have so far...
I still have more work i want to do to the chamber and to the intake bowl and then i need to move on to the SC. but got the new valves, SLP rockers and springs/retainers/locks

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Looking good. I gave up on my heads. I have nowhere near the amount of patience to port heads that i thought I did lol.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

yes very slow going and repitious. its very hard to get the same amount of work done to all 6... that is why you make small changes and repeat often. i have had years of porting exp on TB's and intake manifolds so i was confident. also iron is more forgiving then the aluminum i was working with on the TB's.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Ok so i figured i would post an update. 5/16/12
The topswap is going to be pushed back a while as i want to finish paying off the credit card from the engine swap first. so should be paid by the end of the year. I have been ironing out all the little bugs that pop up. had to replace the trany shift cable as it wasnt properly removed by the shop when the swap was done and it would come loose and not go into park! found a sharp wire that caused a short in the o2 extension i made. had a stripped bold on my alternator. replaced plugs and wires. I found a different STB bar at the junk yard off a 3800 impala. it has a bent shape to allow easier access to the trany dip stick and the brake booster. i swapped that in also i put in different upper engine mounts. these allowed me to rock the engine back a little more to give some clearance for the headers.

Right now here is how the car stands as for current mods:
-FWI and my LQ1 MAF
-HV3 (thanks christophero1973)
-light ported TB (gasket matched, screen removed, MAF thing inside ported a little)
-l67 injectors
-sd headers
-tuning, tuning, and more tuning
I am tempted to install my 1.8 SLP rockers before i do my topswap....

Here is the current plan for the car once it goes topswap:
-Ported Heads (still in progress. similar to stage 3/4 heads except for they will have stock valve sizes)
-Ported LIM on the blower side and ported to match heads
-Ported Blower i will be using a new outlet design for the M90 that i have been working on. Also the inlet will be getting a lot of work as well.
-Ported TB or a different TB altogether. I will not be using the normal North Star as the opening does not funnel air smoothly enough...
-i will stay with the 3.8" pulley until tuned and see where it gets me.
-Si light weight valves
-1.8 SLP roller rockers. i have done more research and these were actually made by Yella terra and i could not find a single complaint about them.
-L76 springs. these springs are about 90# but have a less aggressive ramp rate vs the #90 yellow springs.

Wish list/ follow up mods:
-I would like to have a custom cam cut to allow the use of the 1.8's but ZZP said they will not do it. maybe comp or crow (crow cams has a location in my town)
-race built trany
-light weight pulleys

Lastly i reread the thread and notice some items i didnt completely answer:
Throttle Cable.
I do not know about the 3100 cable but the DOHC's cable did not work/ fit into the 3800 TB nor did its range of pull work either. i had to get a 3800 throttle cable

the DOHC trany cable did work, however the shop broke the clip that holds it to the trany range lever. this allowed it to pop off while driving and not allow me to put in park or reverse. I ended up getting another cable off a 97 Z34 that was at the junk yard as i wanted a 4t65e cable with the adjuster

I did need an O2 extension. i got both ends and a length of wire from the junk yard and made my own. parts were like $3.00 and took less then an hour. later i discovered that a few sharp wires pushed thru the tape and made contact to another wire causing the o2 to read 0mv. it was an intermittent short as the first time i checked the extension it checked fine causing me to check the entire harness from the o2 sensor to the pcm. after it all checked fine i rechecked the extension and discovered the problem.

with the recent tuning and the HV3 i feel the car is gaining more power. either that or im getting used to it. i am tempted to install the rockers as mentioned above. as with everything else i feel the more mods i get on this engine the less difference the blower and ported heads are going to make and the easier it will be to dial everything in. not to mention im just sitting on mods i can be enjoying right now!

here is a pic of how the engine looks right now. i rerouted some of the wires on the front of the engine for a cleaner look.

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Question.

Injectors.

Are they RTV'd in?

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

the back engine brace is off a 3800 impala. it is bent that way factory to clear the trany dipstick and brake booster fill cap. it wasn't made for my gen Monte, but it fits and clears everything better then the straight bar i had before. what looks like a dent is the notch to clear the EGR. the upper engine mounts are a little longer and help to rock the engine back a bit more so i have more clearance between the headers and fire wall. when i do the top swap i will have the heads and headers off so i can pound more and make the clearance i need on the fire wall until then, this works nicely. the upper diagonal braces are off of a newer gen 2 impala as well. i had to cut and redrill one of them as only one side is a direct swap.

yes i put RTV over the injectors... before the O2 sensor wire completely shorted i was convinced i had a vac leak at the injectors... and the fastest way to rule it out was put RTV over top of them. I had this done before on my LQ1 as the l67 injectors are just a little shorter then the LQ1's stock injectors. this caused the O rings not to fully seat so i had no choice but to rtv them in.

Oh that makes sense.
I was just wondering if maybe you got hit or something.
But the clearance for the other engines makes perfect sense.
Hey if it supports it, it works

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

id suggest getting rid of the msd coils and getting stock L67 ones. the msd are a down grade from the l36 ones.

Nice work though! cant wait to see it topswapped.

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Actually no, l36 coils would be a down grade. The l67 are the one said to have a hotter spark then oher GM coils. From th research I have done, there are actually two diff styles of MSD coils for our cars. The square ones like I have and the other that is more rounded like he stock coil. The people who have had good luck have the square ones like me and you dot see the rounded msd any more. My guess is they were the ones failing. The msd have slightly more voltage then the stock l67. I have had th mass since 2005 when I found them on a GTP I ended up parting out. I have had no issues at all. I do not recomend them to anyone but I see no reason to change.

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

ah i did not know there were 2 kinds. i also heard or read recently that there coils test well new but when you retest them later on they have lost some of there juice, but thats just what i heard so im not sure how true it is.

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

If you are up for a "base line" run before the topswap let me know. Im still going out to the track once or twice a month. Man have you been out to u-pull-it lately? there are grand prixs everywhere lol.

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Yeah, i do need to get a base line run in. im still pretty far away from being ready to do the swap... prob wont be till next year at the earliest now. the other day i started porting the l67 TB. not doing anything major but removing the MAF stuff as its a 98 and i wont be using that maf anyway. next just need to remove half the blade shaft that doesn't have the threads. then smooth everything out. how far i open up the back of the TB depends on how the porting goes on the SC. next after that is done i think im going to start porting the LIM to match the old LIM gaskets i have. then i will match them to the heads. after that i will start porting the 97 SC i have. i will be porting the blower a little diff then most but the research and reading i have done make me confident it will work. deff the intake side will be getting some work. after that is done, i just need to put it all together.

Re: [update 5/16/12 ] DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Ok here are the sound clips i got today of my setup: FWI, HV3, SD Headers and a 2.5" catback with a magnaflow muffler.

Sounds much better than I recall my car ever sounding.
