[10-09-2013 ] 3800 swap&topswap Complete!

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

well engine is in. but i had to move the O2 as i needed to pound a 2" section another 1/2"!!! but it is far easier to plug it and put the O2 down lower.... maybe later i can pound it back and use the bung that new bung for my wide band. I will need to make an O2 extension as i dont have time to wait for one to be shipped from ZZP or WBS.

also did anyone have issues with the lower half of the down pipe hanging too low on the car? it looks awful low. it drops down then back up... i think im gonna have it pounded flat on the bottom to make more ground clearance. or have a shop cut and redo the bend.... any input on this?

after the exhaust, all that is left is to get the fuel lines spliced in, rad fans in, connect the battery and starter cables, add fluids and it should run!

Also...Ryan ran a low 14's in a modded 3.4" setup GTP...he has no room to talk about "boring" LMAO

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

thank you for the link. i saw that once before i even thought about buying the headers and forgot. i was just wondering how low the DP will be on my car... im lowered in the front and have smaller dia tires (245/45-17) so its gonna be pretty darn low...

yeah i just cant wait to get it done... the shop didnt do any work on it yesterday... i think im gonna have it towed home and work on it myself. the didnt start on it until over a week after they said they would. the told me it would take 2-3 days. they started it on monday and if it isnt done today im done with them. i'll take it somewhere else to weld the exhaust and prob have them fix the DP too while at it.

all that is left to do is:
-exhaust welded back on
-fuel lines spliced in... the dohc lines were short and diff style fitting
-AC lines
-radiator fans
-connect starter and battery.
-add fluids
-diagonal braces and STB

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

You're not doing the work yourself? That sucks. Everything/motor swap i've done in my car has been in the garage. That way I know it's getting done the way I want it (or right).

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Pretty much I was there for 80% of the work. I couldn't do the actual pulling of the engine and putting in. Don't have space or help. So they did that. They did weld the exhaust and connect the ac. So my list is getting shorter . Cant work on it today, but will have my father in law to help on Sunday. With luck I'll have it running hat night! My only worry right now is keeping metal shavings out of he fuel lines and how bad I will scrape the downpipe.....

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Swap update:
Ok, today i did:
-Fuel lines
-Low pressure PS line
-trany cooler line
-oil change
-moved neg battery cable to clear headers
-secured harness in engine bay

What is left:
-connect High pressure Power steering line to rack (done 11/1/11)
-lower steering boot on rack
-bolt on exhaust and connect O2 sensor
-make original throttle cable work
-change trany filter (done 11/1/11)
-fluids. trany, PS, and coolant
-put on final lug nuts
-install battery, air filter
-install hood

Start procedure:
1)key on look for leaks
2)scan car with tuner to test sensor data.
3)Pull fuel relay and crank engine a few times to prime oil pump
4)reinstall relay and start car. recheck for leaks

Need:
-oil dip stick the part that normally has the o ring is broken and missing.
-throttle cable mine wont fit in the l36 TB and don't think it will pull the tb to 100 WOT.
-hood shock clips as the shop removed two and lost them!

Ok today should be the day i fire her up!

yesterday i picked up the throttle cable from the junk yard police Lumina i have been cannibalizing. along with the mystery driver-side connector, clips for the hood shocks, PCV housing, and a few spare bolts. After work i will pick up the exhaust clamps i need for the header and rear exhaust.

my only cause for concern is when i pulled the thermostat the other day to flush the coolant, there was what i think is oil residue on it. i did not see any residue anywhere else on/in the engine. so maybe someones hands were dirty/oily when they installed the Tstat? The engine had red coolant, dexcool in it so could this be related? here is a pic:

that looks like dex sludge, flush the engine good after you get her running good.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Car has a heart beat. *Has intermittent no start need power steering bleed and exhaust welded misc lugnuts need put on and engine support brackets. *But it survived the drive home

Laptop died so I lost the first data log. I had a ses for fuel tank pressure sensor. Alt is making a rattle sound. Sounds like i might have an upper intake leak?

This is why I like to replace all the gaskets before dropping the motor in the car. You got it from Morad right? if it blows up within the warrant.. send it back and put a new one in.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

It better not blow up. I don't want to go thru having it pulled again. Deff won't have that shop do it/ touch my car ever again. Yes it was from Morad.
So for those that don't know, my DOHC died in the beginning of October In its place, went in a 3800 from a 98 z34. I had a shop do it and was a big headache. It has speed daddy headers and my 2.5 exhaust. I will be porting the topswap I picked up with the powertran and Installing it at the end of the year, hopefully sooner.

Ok so still much to do but it runs. Here is a video. Will have a better one later but here's a quick one from my phone: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d57/Z34Phoenix/IMG_1207.mp4
After priming it with the fuel relay out, it fired up on the first turn of the key. Lots of different sounds compared to my DOHC. I will miss that engine. I think the alt is rattling at low rpm. I might have a vac leak in the uim.
Looking over the scan, I had a max of 14* of Kr. Trims were +8. I know I have might have exhas leaks as the crossover doesnt hav clamps yet. I realized I have no vac line on the evap... So that is a vac leak I need to plug. I have a new bin to upload with the p0452 removed for fuel tank pressure sensor my 96 dont have one, MAF corrections, adjusted pulses per mile for my tires, and added fuel for pe even though I havent even gotten into pe yet. Not even past 3500 I don't think. So that's it for now. Today was the first time in a month the. Ar moved under its own power. I'm very excited and can't wait to have it 100%

So for tomorrow/ later today:
-vac and exhaust leaks fix
-new bin
-lug nuts
-strut braces and stb
- use the autolite 104's I have
- check and bleed power steering
- check all fluids
- begin tuning: idle/ cruse/ pe/ wot

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Yeah, you gots some vacuum leaks in that. Also, WOWTHERESNOROOMINTHERE batman!

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

You'll get it finished up. Congrats. The details that you are finishing up are what takes the time.

Still surprised you found a shop willing to do the swap. Most places are very hesistant to make a big change like that.

theres more room then when the DOHC was in there! once the M90 is on, there will be less space too.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Great Job! Good luck with the rest of the build. :th_beer-toast1:

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

i have a spare M90 that came off a 97... im thinking about getting the heads ported and then putting that blower on until i can port the better m90 i got with the swap kit. that will also give me time to match up a north star to that M90 as well.

Re: DOHC died, 3800 swap in progress. !! PICS ADDED!!

Ok so today i fixed:
-vac leak at evap and found a loose bolt on UIM, band clamp at front off crossover... still need one on rear.
-new bin with ses's removed
-lug nuts
-strut braces and stb
- checked and bled power steering
- checked all fluids

it sounds great now. all that is left is to have the
-rear cross over band clamp installed
-replace starter as it seems to not engage all the time
-have the exhaust welded up. and see what i can do about having the speed daddy Ubend removed from the headers.
