04+ GTP trans Swap into Regal ?

Hi all,

I know this is a simple question, but is there any reason i cant use the trans out of an 07 GTP in my 04 regal?
I believe i remember reading somewhere that the 04 and up transmissions have stronger chains in them.

The connector pinouts for the harness connections to the trans may be different. You'll want to look up both cars in AllData or the FSM, and verify the connector pinouts.

not gonna work. its not the same electrically. and im not talking about the plug pin outs.

04 regal still has a l67 and the older style tranny.

Went to the JY today to look at other options, and their interchange said nothing else fit the 04 regal. I know they had a 2000 GS, and some pre 2004 GTPs. Im guessing their system was wrong but you never know. I didnt see anything super promising. Im looking for something with a clear reason for being in the yard.

id beg brandon to build one for ya lol worth every dollar.

Im Sure Brandon does a great job, but my dad is a 40 year ASE master tech. He rebuilt the trans in his GTP a few years ago. The plan is for me to research the parts, and let him build it. He wants to build mine first before we beef his up.
on that note, the plan is the 4340 input shaft, and GXP chains, plus a rebuild kit. Anything else i need to add in?

Built 4t65e - The results are in.

I'd pretty much use the list on page 1 minus a few things. You're going with the dual chains vs the single I have spec'd. Aluminum pan... That kind of stuff.

I *believe* the HV093 is the standard replacement chain for all 4T65e's. N/A, SC, V8...

Id totally go single chain if i knew where to find one. TEP says theyre out of production.

this thread here says the GXP chain (which has superseeded the older 4t65e chains as a replacement ) is heat treated and stronger. GXP Chain

To be clear; The chain is still available. That's a standard replacement part for a different application; Aftermarket HV058 Transmission Chain, .875" Wide (42 Links) (Rigid Chain) | eBay

The gears/sprockets are the unicorns.

That sounds right.

IIRC, the 7/8" gears/sprockets are stock parts for the older 4T60 (440-T4) and are modified/machined to work in the 4T65e.

So the question is, would the GXP chain support big power as long as im not launching it. If not, any suggestions on how to get my hands on the right chain/sprokets?

Although I'm not able to answer that question, the ones who could are going to want a number. What's your version of big power?

450 ish wheel. The intent is to go turbo but not CRAZY turbo. essentially whatever it takes to get me into the mid 11s

First off.. who is going to tell me the difference between a 04 Regal SC trans vs an 07 GTP trans? I see people saying it's different and won't work at all and this confuses me.

I've done a bunch of trans swaps and it'll be the right ratio, electronics being w body to w body are likely the same with the exception of external vs internal pnp switch. Which is two 12mm bolts away from being swapped. Valve body might be different and the limiting factor, I'm no longer sure. Just wondering if anyone remembers the differences for sure.

The manifold pressure switch is definitely different. The 97-03 MPS has 6 switches. The 04+ is a single switch. The valve bodies will be drilled accordingly. I can only assume the logic in the PCM would be different for the different MPS's. (?)

Could you swap VB's and range switches and be good? Probably, but I can't guarantee. I never did any parts swapping. Just straight up rebuilds of each type.

There is also the difference on where the checkball for the TC is located. IIRC, 97-03 is in the cooler fitting. 04+ is in the VB. Not sure that matters all that much though.

I think.
