04 GP Stalling Problem



No, it's not on. It's not throwing any codes. It started when I went to go wash my car saturday. I had the stereo on for about 2 hours while I was washing. It turned on fine as soon as I turned the key. You think maybe it could be my alternator going bad? I did see my headlights dimming when it started acting up. What's a good way to test an alternator? Cuz I turned the car on and disconnected the negative terminal and it kept running. That's how I was always told how to check it but they also said it was for the older cars. Idk.
 
with a volt meter, or hit the parts store, they have a bat/alt tester.

you want to see at least 12 volts off the battery car off. then test it again running, should be over 13 volts but not to much more then 14.
 
I did check the battery. It's at 12v with the car off and 14v with the car on. I also checked for a dirty TB, it's got enough coolant, it's not overheating, no smell or smoke coming from under the hood. It's really weird.
 


If it starts right back up and die immediately, it will either stall out when the rpm levels even out after the initial start up or it will stay on while I step on the gas but as soon as I let go to put it in drive, it stalls. In the video after it cut off, I let the car sit for about 10-15 seconds and it turned right on and was able to drive it 2 doors down back to my house with me just barely touching the gas.
 
Sounds like a MAF sensor, mine was doing the same thing. Hooked it up to a realtime data reader and my car was reading 0 for the air flow. Try pulling the sensor off the the air box, and see if you have any problems starting.

It shouldn't, I pulled mine out and it started up just fine and I drove it around just fine. Your car might run a little rich with out it, so i wouldn't drive for a long time with it out.
 
Ok, I will definitely do that today. I don't have any problem starting the car and babying the throttle but as soon as I slightly put my foot into it in first gear and get it above 1500 rpm, thats when the problem starts. If I baby the throttle, it will shift gears and everything. It's very hard to explain man. Haha. As you can tell.
 
I did not wash the motor. I went with the oem plugs and wires and it had never had this issue before. It's the first time it's ever done this.

Something that I also thought was kind of weird was that about 2 weeks ago, I was having a loud tapping/clicking noise coming from the engine. I had just finished up a head gasket swap so I thought it maybe was a loose rocker arm that was causing the noise. Took it to a shop, they said it was the lifters making the noise. Drove it home and the noise went away. Long story short, the noise went away on its own after a few days but on one of those days, it did throw a misfire in cylinder 1. The next day it was gone and that code has not returned either. Even with the noise and "misfire in cylinder 1", it did not affect performance at all. Throttle response was good, it shifted smoothly, temp was good and saw no sign of something wrong. It did sit about 3 months before the swap though. Could that code have been an early warning sign of something? Maybe a crank sensor?
