It is probly a lifter tap, does it sound like its coming from the left, looking at the engine from the front?

Agreed, the odds of it being a lifter are high, mine did it as well

lets make this clear, a rod knock is a worn bearing, its like a tooth ache, its not getting better all by its self.

once the car warms up the oil gets thinner, then the rod knock gets real loud.


a lifter on the other hand will pump up and stop tapping after a few minutes. GM even says this is fine, as long as it stops in a few minutes.


id do a oil change, use 40 weight oil, its thicker and may shut that tap up.

my car will have lifter tap if i let a oil change go to long. anything over 3500 miles and i start tapping. then it goes away after 3 to 5 taps. change the oil, it stops altogether.

Try an engine cleaner like adding sea foam to the oil shorty before an oil change. Of course you just changed it though. That may help.

lifter is dead then, no way its a rod knock if it goes away.

pretty sure it was dsmuts whos lifter was dead, it ticked all the time, it came and went. he pulled the lifters and one was busted up.

then there was another guy who had a bad lifter tick, full time tick, he sea foamed it and on the vid the tick went away. i was more then amazed at that vid. it was a loud knock too.

Piston slap will go away after the engine warms up. I've dealt with it on my 02 gt. I just mention it because I had that knocking, tapping sound that common sense says is a lifter. Had two mechanics also tell me it was a lifter. I replaced the lifters but the sound was still there.
