Tires currently on 2006 grand prix are 225/55/r16, have a great deal on 205/55/r16 what will the pro's and con's be for these tires?

you should be running 225/60/16.

a 205/55 is going to be skinny AND real short. would not buy.

205/55 is pretty thin, you gone need that extra tire width for traction and to put that power to the ground. I'm running 225/55/17 myself, but I'm personally considering something a little wider. Believe it or not, tires play a huge role in performance for any car on the road.

I'm thinking 245/50/17, but I want 245/55. I would go wider but I believe 245 is the widest I can go on my regal and the wider you go the shorter the tire is, so I would have to drop to 50. That's what most shops tell me anyway. I like the way the height of 55' fills the wheel well but 50' isn't really noticeable. I'm sure there's a company out there that can make me a 245/55/17 tire. Wider is always better

You're going to benefit more from buying a better tire more than a wider cheaper tire. I managed to hook 270 whp on 225's no problem.

A properly sized tire is not shorter if its wider. The aspect ratio is just that, a ratio. so 205/55r16 looks "super low profile", but a 235/55r16 looks pretty "normal" yet the aspect ratios are identical.

As for the OP: 205/55r16 is so small it should never be put on a grand prix.

The tire you want is 26.6" tall, the tire you're asking about is 24.9" tall. Way too far out. the car would be lower to the ground, more wheel gap, handle like a mazda 3 (not good, overly rough for no reason), speedometer would read much higher than you were actually traveling, ABS might give you **** as well.

Yeah, agreed. Though I will never put cheap tires on my cars, I would sacrifice a lil(that's a lil) height for width if had to. I you could find any tire size out there that you want but 245/55/17 is just one size that none on these shops out here will get. So is 245/55/17 available for this car or is 235/50/17 more common?

What's the widest tire for these cars that's actually available on the market?

Naw, I rather not...if I can't find it in this thread than I probably wouldn't find it at all. I'll probably go with the 235/55. Not much of a diff but enough to make a difference. Moral of the thread is, GO WIDER....

I don't think you totally understand how tire sizes work.

245/50/17 would be about the proper size tire. It would be about 26.6" tall and 9.64" wide. If you could find a 245/55/17 it would be the same width but it would be TALLER. It would grow to 27.6" tall.

This is a post I made awhile back. Its actually a sticky
