Re: 1997 Black GTP, Painted Headers.

264 on a cam is NOT impressive.... There are tons of DYNO vids out there of rocker guys making more then that.

Considering stock is less than 200~, a 60+ WHP (think close to 100 crank horsepower gains at that point) gain with a tune and other babbles and bolt-ons is pretty good. A local on KCPMC has the 2nd fastest time and it's knocking on the 11's, with a GenV, VS, headers, etc.

Just because it makes it sound like a misfire, doesn't mean it wouldn't crap all over most of the cars here.

Well that's also only like a 20ish HP gain over a simple 3.4 setup. AND there was work done to the "weak link" valve train... So again I state nit impressed...

Josh, lol at you.

Sometimes I wish you had dan's tips so I could poke more fun.

Actually at the time I was one of the first people to get the VS cam and I was running an entirely stock valve train. Only about 80k on that car at the time though so it had no issues with that. All it was was a VS cam, downpipe, I believe a 3.4 pulley, plugs/wires, CAI, quick street tune without afr guage, early ass zzp pcm design, and that was pretty much it. Was a very cheap setup for 264WHP. stock mani, stock valve train, stock heads, stock exhaust (except downpipe), stock tranny etc.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Painted Headers.

I'm a fan of the performance from a VS, just not the sound.

Still, it makes nearly as much power as any XP/S1X with similar mods, and is easier on valvetrain parts.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Painted Headers.

Nick, i tried telling josh that of what you just stated ^

But he won't believe me. The VS isn't a bad cam at all.

Great DD cam as it's easier on the valvetrain with good gains.

See... It is THAT little word that proves my point.... I know.. I will do a performance mod and NOT make as much power as I can be.... That sounds like a plan...

That's just like saying you don't want SD headers because ZZP headers or Wbody etc have bigger primaries and that your it's not giving you "nearly" as much performance gains.

For a DD most will prefer not to put a lot of strain on their valve train. Unless you enjoy taking your motor apart or dropping another one in I don't see how that would be any kind of a issue. There's plenty of guys that proved you don't have to go XP or bigger to gain power. They're very similar as far as gains..if you tune it rights.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Painted Headers.

Ok.. Show me ONE car that make a LOT of power on a VS cam, and HONESTLY tell me that it wont make more power on the XP cam.. And I will drop this....

Enough said then. Chasing HP number isn't necessarily the biggest concern when it comes to a DD. Reliability is the name of the game for some. After all its a Grand Prix if your wanting every bit of performance gains choose another platform.

If thats is your point of view then why would you even bother with doing a cam at all...... just do basic bolt ons and call it a day.. IF you are going to go through the hassle of a cam build WHY would you then NOT get all the gains from it?

Wanting more performance then the typical rocker bolt on. Yes I've went that route before and wasn't happy comparing that to even a VS cam is far off. At the same time I still enjoy walking outside and turn the key and driving off. Not worried about much if any downtime in case something does mess up. If it wasn't a DD sure I wouldn't mind going all out with a build but when you constantly driving out of town or a hour each way to work. This was the smartest route.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Painted Headers.

I 100% agree with RED on this.

Its all in your intentions.

The VS is great to DD and gives you good power gains.

Want a good VS cam build, talk to OrangeL67. His VS cam build was big.

He will tell you a thing or two...

Quick vid of his on the VS cam, id say thats a decent pull.

Ooh burned Josh. In all seriousness it's really not a bad cam it's worth it for the gains. Yea there's bigger options but it all boils down to what type of car you want and how you want it to perform.
