Id like to start off saying im sorry for the caps lock. Posting from a cell phone and i cant get it off. But lets get to the point. I just purchased a 2000 grand prix gt 109000 miles. Dealer got it from original owner 50 some year old lady. So im guessin she never rode it to hard. Car drove fine during test drives. Got to drive car by myself. Floored it up to 90mph every gear shifted smoothly. Noticed no dash lights flickering. Drove around for about 25 minutes agressively. Temprature gauge made it to the middle and stayed there steady. Couple days go buy of lookong around at more cars, and i decide to make purchase. Drove it 2 miles from lot to ny house where i ket it run for 30 minutes. I then drove to gas staion and threw a couple gallons in. Fron there i hopped right onto express way. I then floored it, car drove fine for couple miles. Accelerated and decelerated fine. Till i noticed a loss of power. To which i floored it again, this time i noticed a loud grinding noise then csr stalled. I was abke to throw it in neutral and start it back up once. I coasted to side of the road where i tried sarting it multiple times. I smelled something burning. I popped hood and there was smoke coming from the bkttom of motor front side. Battery ended up dying but i hae a jump box, car would turn over but would not start. Juml box could have been dead. From their i got it towed to my mechanic. Everything other then the smoke points twoards a alternator. Im getting that replaced now. But i would like evryones input, or someone whobhas had similar oroblem. After reading through other posts i can see this was the best forum to chose. Everyone seems to know a lot and are helpful. Thanks again for reading this long ass thing and helping me out.

Fried alternator?

Odd, so it seems like your mechanic already fixed the issue...so what's the problem then?

My shop was already closed when it happened yesterday. Pretty sure the shop just now opened up. So i should know in a few hours what the problem was. I only made a assumption saying the alternator.

Update from mechanic. Alternator putting out correct voltage. He believes it is the rocker arm. With new years he wont be able to pull the valve covers off till wednesday. The smoke from my motor was something a little more then the alternator. One hell of a lemon i just bought.

I was always under the impression when you buy a used car it's as is. It's not like the dealer knew it was going to take a dump on him. Op stated it drove fine during the test drive.

Sounds like your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing. He's just throwing guess out that make no sense.

Not from a dealership, it still needs to pass inspection and I think in MA at least there's a 14 day lemon law or something like that. But the dealer should still make things right since its likely he didn't disclose that it's sold as is.

well hes in Detroit, not mass. so those rules done count.

in mass the buyer has 2 weeks to get the car to inspection, if it fails for any reason, the seller MUST TAKE THE CAR BACK, AND GIVE A FULL REFUND, OR FIX THE CAR. all its up to the buyer.

if it was that fast of a break down, take it back to the dealer. they should work on it being its just been bought. even if its a "as is sale".

if they say sorry, we're not fixing it, your just plain old SOL and on your own.
