** SOLVED ** 03 Grand Prix GT runs for a few minutes then dies won't start

Hey everyone having a bad weekend here in Northern Canada. Went Christmas shopping yesterday in my GMC Suburban and the fuel pump let go no problem tow it home cause I have a Grand Prix GT sitting in the driveway as a backup.. lol This car has always run flawless for me however the battery was dead. Real dead. so here is my story and what happened point for point.

-charged battery car started ran smooth as a purring kitten Drove one block to go get fuel and it dies.
-Added fresh fuel car has been sitting for a few months car will turn over but not stay running just sputters and dies.
-can clearly hear fuel pump charging the fuel system. Pushed it back to the driveway left it on charge all night
-Went to start this morning again ran like a charm no problem but within 5 minutes it died.
-Won't start again just sputters and dies
-I changed the battery for a known good battery and tried to start the car but it would not. This would also rule out resetting the computer as when the battery was disconnected it was for more then 10 minutes which would reset everything.
-Pulled mass air flow sensor connector car started ran good for a minute or two then began to run rough. Couldn't keep it running without giving it fuel and eventually it didn't want to run and died.
-Plugged it back in and have again had a series of no starts..

What up? lol

Here is another update.
- Went back out and just unplugged the mass airflow sensor again and it seems to want to run but still will die. Should this car run with this disconnected or will it run rough or not at all...

The fuel pump resistor is a weak link in the '97 and up Grand Prixs; failure is ... will not be able to see the fuel pump resistor if you have a 1998 or newer Grand Prix; ...and route the wiring along the inside of the fenderwell to your new location

just click on the red,jimmy

That's only for gtp's I believe. If it runs better with the maf unhooked then it's bad.

I don't know if this is relevant or not. After disconnecting the battery in my car, I had some hard/long starts, with a rough idle. I did this (which is the procedure for some other vehicles I've owned) and it made the next start normal.

Turn the key on and off a couple of times, waiting 10 second in between each. This should send the throttle body through some self-checks. Then, turn the key to the run position, wait a couple of seconds, and slowly push the pedal all the way to the ground, and slowly let it out. I did this with the key on/off part a couple of times. Next try, my car started normally and ran smooth.

Maybe this was just timeing and not relevent to this car at all, but with electronic throttle bodies it's possible for them to lose calibration.

Is there a cut off date? I just cleaned the DBW TB on my grandma's 2003 GP.

Or if it's cable driven, I'd look at making sure the idle air control valve works.

my car does the exact same thing after taking off the battery, first start takes a few turns of the engine before it fires up. its the pcm relearning, your trans shift points will feel different as well, till it learns how you drive.

04+ are dbw

swapped out MAP and MAF sensors from a running 02 parts car I have. No go.. Called a mechanic that I sort of know from business dealings he thinks ignition controll module or crank sensor. It's just weird because it starts like a charm runs for 3-5 minutes then dies then you can't start it till it sits for a bit.

Here is some more info. Never had any problems with this car it's been sitting for a few months. Less then a month ago I had to move it off the street from in front of my house cause the snow is here and didn't want tickets. I asked my friend to go and boost it and I would be right out.

I didn't realize this but after I started it I noticed that he had the cables direct to the battery.. think that would have messed up the ignition controll module or something. I only ran the car long enough to put it in the diveway so I didn't notice these symptoms then.

Re: 03 Grand Prix GT runs for a few minutes then dies won't start

I'd swap the ICM from the parts car.

Re: 03 Grand Prix GT runs for a few minutes then dies won't start

Is that really a ICM symptom though I mean when it starts it runs smooth as a baby.

Re: 03 Grand Prix GT runs for a few minutes then dies won't start

Can't hurt to try it but I'm not sure if a icm would do that or not.

Well guess what swapped out the ICM and bang purring smooth as a kitty once again.. As If.....

Re: 03 Grand Prix GT runs for a few minutes then dies won't start

ONLY GTP has the fuel pump resistor............ ONLY GTP I seen so many posts about that and hopefully the next person that has similar issues sees this post ONLY GTP has fuel pump resistor...... lol

It was the Ignition Control Module... If it was not that it would have been the much harder to change crank sensor behind the harmonic ballancer. Fortunate for me I had an entire 02 GP GT for parts so i was just able to swap out the ICM without testing anything but if you need to test these parts before buying I found an excellent way here. Part 1 -GM 3.8L Ignition Module Test and Crank Sensor Test (3X, 18X)
