i have a 97 gtp. i don't know what type of tranny i have i don't know if its an hd trans or not. my transmission shifts hard from 2nd to third. anyone else have a similar problem. now my tranny shifts hard into every gear especially 1st

yes i have but it was at 155k on the original fluid and filter. i have a new filter gasket and fluid. could it possibly be a sensor?

can I make a suggestion here I see this all the time with fluid not being changed for like ever and people having problems, trans fluid and filter is not too expensive now think about it you change your oil and filter every 3-5k right? Yet you leave tranny fluid (which is really another type of oil) in for like 100-200-300 FOREVER -K. I know it a messy job but changing it like once every 12-18 months is worth the mess for peace of mind, least thats how I feel. I'd be interested in Billbost, Drunkies and stealthees opinion on this especially.

well when i got the car it had never been changed and now that its changedits shifting hard for 1 gear. all of the other gear you can barely feel it shifting its that smooth

no i put the valvoline max life trand fluid in it.

tranny fluid is far form a oil. its hydraulic fluid really. and every 60,000 miles is about the norm. and tranny fluid is not really all that cheap at 6 and up a quart, you need 8 quarts. filters about 15.

i used travelers brand fluid from tractor supply, it cost 30 bucks for a 2 gallon jug. same makers as walmarts brand of fluid, Warner performance products or something like that. used it to fill the whole tranny, a year later, its still nice and red. no slips or issues with my used tranny yet. ( knocking on wood as i type this lol )

Check and make sure it's got the correct amount in it and if it's a little low add some lucas stop slip. If it's right where it should be add some stop slip at your next fluid change.

take that new gasket and throw it in the trash. re use the old one. clean it, put it back on.

the stock gasket 99% of the time is of better quality. your bolts may be a tad bit loose causing a small leak.

clean it up, if it looks like its all there reuse it. if its torn up go with the new one that comes with the filter. i look at it like you have a back up.

Trans fluid has detergents and conditioners in it. If it hasn't been done in a long time, I always suggest doing it. But at that point you don't do a flush only a pan drop and filter which should take about 7ish quarts. That way you don't remove all dirty fluid that is dirty because it contains a lot of clutch material. When doing the service, if the gasket is ribbed and metal inside of it, it's the factory gasket. Factory is expected to be a lifetime gasket. Reuse if it's in good shape.

On your hard shift, it's likely your third clutches are very worn (typical) and the trans is getting tired. I would suggest a shift kit and a bottle of Lucas stop slip to help at the shift. When most experience a hard shift or P1811 code with these transmissions, it's a great band aid until you choose to do a trans or dump the car.

Bill my point is (and basically I am just looking to see if it is valid ) is that if you change it every 18 months or so or about 20-25k there would really no need to do flushes. Would you agree (I hope so cause that's what I'm doing lol)?

Pretty much. I haven't confirmed this, but pretty sure the FSM would say to drop pan and filter service about ever 30K miles. I doubt it suggests a flush.
