hello everyone i am having some trouble and am looking to get some help here but i have a 97 gt 3.8 and i bought the car 3 days ago and i traded it for a non running for probe but anyways drove the car 45 mins home no problem at all ran smooth got it home parked it wife took it for a smin around the block came back about an hour later we took it to the auto parts store to run the check engine codes and i got the egr insignificant flow and im getting and evap and so from there went to the gas station put gas in it went home about 3 hours later i went out to go to the store and it cranking but not firing up i have checked every fuse that is in the car and relays and they are all good i hear the fuel pump prime before i try to start it and it also has a new fuel pump also i am stumped any help would be awesome thanks for any and all help

Need to check for spark. Check the harness that goes to the ICM (the thing that the coils are bolted to). The EGR insufficient flow probably just means you need a new EGR valve. Junkyard time. The Evap code is most likely the purge valve going bad. Please post the exact codes that you pulled so we can better help you.

Did you check all the underhood fuses as well? I know sometimes they can be overlooked.

Ok I'm about to go grab the code reader again from my friend and yes I checked the fuses under the hood I pulled them all and all where good pulled every fuse in the cabin too just to make sure but all where good also the perge valve is good its shooting gas out if you push the valve in I called a shop and asked they said the egr valve normally won't cause the car not to start but he said that carbon build up in the ports leading to the egr could cause this

I think the valve you pressed was the pressure tap on the fuel rail. That's not the evap purge valve. But, it's good to know there is fuel there.

Def. give the MAF trick a try. It may not like starting w/ the MAF disconnected, but give it a little throttle to keep it going and eventually it will smooth out.

If that doesn't help see what the code reader can pick up. Check all your wiring to make sure some critter hasn't chewed through something (it happens).

The EGR insufficient flow probably just means you need a new MAP SENSOR.

Fixed that up for ya. :th_thumbsup-wink:

Unplug the maf like mentioned. If that doesn't do it.. I'd shotgun a crank sensor on after checking the ICM wiring (also mentioned).

sounds good im going to try these and see if i can get it running as far as starting wth out the MAF hooked up just unplug the sensor or take it out

i also have checked all the wiring and it is all good nothing is cut chew ect. if i cant get it started by today then im going to just take the thing to the shop i dont have the time to deal with it i need it running

Unplug the sensor. These guys can be fragile and sensitive so you don't want to remove him unless you've got nothing to lose on doing so.

ok and i also took the pvc valve off and it was broken in 2 peaces but i don't think that would cause it not to start at all or could this cause the problem?

It shouldn't...but it would be an extra vacuum leak. Likely it was the cause of your EGR flow code.

Because the egr flow is noticed by the change in manifold pressure, which is why I said.. it was likely a bad map sensor.

yes i herd that the egr valve don't normally go bad but ill work on changing that out and ill take a look at the map here ill post some pics of the car here soon i got it in a trade for a non running ford probe gt that had been sitting for 7 years in a friends parents backyard was going to mess with it but lost interest then i had a guy post this and i jumped on it and i traded straight up car ran really well when i drove it when i got on the interstate the check engine light went off and came back on after getting off the interstate but then this

Dude.. pay attention. EGR valves can go bad. Yours is most likely not bad. Google the code and read up on it. Your map sensor reads the change in airflow expected. Likely it's the pcv or map causing your code. If you change the egr, you are wasting your money. I'd really prefer you handed it to me if you are going to throw it away.

nobody said anything about throwing it away all im trying to do is get this car running so i dont understand where you are getting that from

ok so here is the codes that its throwing P1651 fan relay ,P0401 exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient detected ,P1406 Egr valve pintle position circuit fault ,P1655 evap purge solenoid control circuit fault trying to see witch one is making it not start

ok so the map sensor is replaced and the battery still the same result cranking over but not firing up please anyone help

also have tried to start the car with the MAF unhooked and no luck there tried unhooking the map no luck either the map is brand new
