• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

So what to do first?

I just want some input on this, I plan on doing a cam w/headers and port everything I can eventually, but this winter I don't know what I want to do.

I know our transmissions are kind of weak especially once ya start getting over 300 whp...

My buddy had a mustang and before he did anything to his engine he built his tranny up pretty nicely. And it worked out great for him...

So I'm wondering if it'd be a good idea to go basically all out with upgrading my tranny and replacing a lot of hard parts, and put in a shift kit and all the goodies first THEN move on to the engine?

I'm asking because I know I can hurt my tranny by modding out my engine a lot before doing anything to the tranny, but if I get my tranny all beefy and banging out gears like a boss, can I mess up my engine or anything else?

Thanks for everyone on here, since I got my account on here I'm on this thing almost all day everyday reading and learning... Makes me want to buy another Gp to leave stock and be my DD once I get my Gtp now all modded out simply because I feel very comfortable working on the 3800 because I've read soooooo much about it... Seriously guys, thanks for being here.

I'm on my stock trans for the car with no problems but i also have a spare on the shelf in my garage.

it depends OP.
you can drive it till it blows and THEN Get a built trans. or you can build trans now and then add the mods.
if this car is your DD i would just invest in the built trans first. that way youll be on top of it.

yup if u plan on doing serious mods in the future now is the time for the built trans. thats what every guy on here is going to tell ya

FIRST thing you need to do...(since the title of this thread is "So what to do first?") is read the link in my sig. THEN ask yourself what are your plans... YES over 300whp these trans will WILL brake. BUT.. They WILL brake on stock power levels too. IF you have low miles and you are only going to go with a 3.4 setup of something for the time being, you will be fine.. IF you plan on jumping RIGHT into the Cam build, then I suggest getting the trans done first.

O rily? I'm at 221K with 20k being on a rockered 3.4 setup :D Not broke yet

Plan for engine:
VS or Xp cam, can't decide
Possibly custom headers Or Sd
Wideband o2 sensor
Either buy hp tuners or have some1 w/hp tune it
Vac line kit(might do now b4 store 4 winter)
Higher # fuel injectors
Doin vc and lim gaskets possibly porting,s/c too during cam install
See if handles a 3.4, should easily w/cam and headers, probably the lowest I'll go w/o an IC
Get or make a way to ram air a huge ass cone with a sd hood

Car is DD during summer have xterra in case I'm doing something to Gtp I can drive the X

I've read the safe modding thread a few times, I've read lots of threads on here, not as many as some but I feel ive read a good amount, want to start doing the things I read about.

But looks like I'm gonna have to wait a while until I do things cuz I'm gonna have to save to get the tranny built.

I thought of going the rocker route before I did cam but you can get bad rockers and get screwed, plus gains are bigger with cam. Crazy that tranny has held on so long, my shifts not in perf shift are taking about.65 secs, waiting for that code to show up. Thinkin about doin a shift kit to bandaid it til I get it built even.

Yes aeroforce gauge is on the list too.

Budget??? Oh right how much I can't spend. Lol.
I can save 50-100$ (or spend on parts) a week depending on how much I wanna spoil myself throughout it. That I think should get me places quickly...

If things go the way I want with my xterra I may have a 2001 gt dr and 3000 cash to put into the Gtp. We will see though.
