Re: Random Thought Thread 2.0

I need yalls opinions, you experienced living on your own peoples.

What I have is a very old (probably 20 or more years), inefficient, 220 21K BTU window unit in the living room. In the bedroom there's a fairly new 110 energy efficient 5k btu unit.

I have noticed on the meter in the back of the house, if the 220 is on, the wheel spins pretty rapidly. However with JUST the 110 on, it doesn't hardly affect the spinning wheel. This tells me that the newer 110 uses hardly any electricity and the old 220 is an energy hog (duh).

My strategy thus far has been to run the 110 only at night and allow the 220 to cool the whole house during the day. However, the energy bill went up $40 this month. Granted the 106* weather for a week didn't help either. So my thoughts are maybe this month I could try keeping the 110 on to help take the ease off the 220 and since the 110 is efficient and uses nothing, it will help the 220 run less, thus saving energy over all.

Thoughts?

Re: Random Thought Thread 2.0

The 220 has 4 times the cooling capacity. The meter for 4 110's would surely move about the same. If you want the best solution is get a new 220 that is energy efficient and then that would be the better solution.

Re: Random Thought Thread 2.0

That's not an option....so we must roll with what we got. And that means figure out the best way to save energy. I'm thinking if we used the 110 during the day as well to keep heat down back there, the 220 won't have to run as much in the front of the house.

Re: Random Thought Thread 2.0

So what others do. Got a delay timer built into them? Have it come on a couple hours before you come home.

Re: Random Thought Thread 2.0

No, neither of them have a timer deal. Can't you buy the kind that plugs in right before the unit plugs in the wall?

Re: Random Thought Thread 2.0

I just can't buy any units right now. Too much else going on. Plus my dad and I worked our ass off getting this 220 in here. I love it it does a great job. It's old but it works.

sadly it drinks power cause its so old. 220 is a monster unit. i bet its more than you really need. how many btu's is the 220 unit? sounds like 20,000 to me, if it make the wheel on the meter spin that fast.

Re: Random Thought Thread 2.0

It is in fact a 21,00 BTU. It cools the living room, kitchen, dining room, and the bathroom. If I don't run the a/c in the bedroom, the bedroom isn't hot but it's a tad muggy. So the 220 cools the majority of the house, and again the 110 in the bedroom is so I'm cool when I sleep. But my thoughts is if it can help take the work load off ole big'n then I would leave it on...

EDIT: And I'm looking online for a 220 timer...not much luck yet. If you know where to get one, holler.

Maybe try a electrical contractor place Brandon. We have a place up here called Wabash electric. We haven't run into anything they can't get us for work.

I told my boss I wanted to strap a coworker to the flag pole during the storm in hopes he'd get hit by lightening. He agreed!
How can someone be so stupid

Dyno'd diesel trucks for 13.5 hours yesterday at the Cecil County Fair. Put up somewhere between 45-50 trucks. Think the most I've ever done at Carlisle was 26. Didn't get home 'till midnight, slept 'till 12:30. Woke up and watched Starship Troopers with Chinese food. Tough day so far.

Had one truck turbo'd and bottled... something over 1300hp. Pants-changer when he pressed that red button. Shoulda seen the look on the driver's face (we usually drive, but the whole group had their club president or something doing like six of their trucks). The very serious chance of him grenading actually made the Fair organizers remove people from the area.

Truck in question? That's alot of ponies

brandon just turn on the 220 when you get home and leave it off during the day your electric bill will go down drastically.
