Suggestions for a good gun to buy.

Its posts like these that make me happy I live in Texas. Walk in to a gun store and with in 15 minutes you are walking out with a gun.

Have you watched many COPS videos. They're mostly in Texas. I wonder why.
Still love the accessibility though.

No one will **** with you.

As per my opinion, Glocks tend to be inaccurate (shot both a 17 and a 19, couldn't hit ****)
I prefer our .45 Dan and Wesson. Shoots incredibly well, handles great, recoil is moderate, but it's not sharp, it kind of rolls back. Plus .45's stop people.

CCW Application went in today. All went smooth. Hopefully will have it soon!

That means I have to read this thread again and really consider the options.

I'm not comfortable with a 9mm's stopping power. I carry a .40. I'd carry my 10mm but if I shot someone the DA would tell the jury I carried a canon to hunt people. I carry either a Beretta Cougar or a Beretta Elite II. I don't care for Glocks. At the range the only gun I've seen fail are Glocks. I don't like the way they feel in my hand. Try several and shoot what you shoot well. Sigs are GREAT guns but I shoot others better. Get your training first and see what you're comfotable with. I carry a semi-auto with no external safety. But I had LOTS of training and practice and carried for a while. Some guys would shoot themselves everytime they presented without a safety. And once you know your gun don't let anyone tell you to carry with an empty chamber. I dont like 1911s either to carry, that cocked hammer bothers me.

Don't forget you're carrying with the idea of taking a human life. That's not as easy as it sounds. If someone comes in to rob you they probably already know that don't care about someone else's life. You have to be clear headed enough to figure out when it's time to shoot before presenting your weapon and clear headed enough to shoot without hesitation. Always remember there are lots of things that can go wrong in a gun fight. I got that quote from a TV series but it is really true. Also if you can't get to your weapon really fricking fast it my be of no use to you. Like I said I like a .40 but a .25 in your pocket is better than a .50 that's so heavy you leave it home.

Takes about 2 weeks to get a permit in Delaware. Takes about 15 minutes to buy a gun if the background check system isn't too busy.
And I believe registering a gun is unconstitutional.

There fixed it for ya. But, if you don't you're a criminal.

in fl no registration either.

to the OP. everyone has their own opinions and in time so will you. like already said its best to find a range that rents guns and try some out. I think the first step in CCW should be to figure out what you can carry comfortably

1) Size of the pistol. take a good look at the cloths you wear year round. you might find in the summer you need a very small gun and in the winter you can carry a full size pistol. another factor is your size and weight. if your thin it will be hard to hide a full size pistol. also many of the subcompact pistols on the market are just full size pistols that have shorter grips and barrels. this does nothing to help hide its foot print. i am thin and found it hard to cc anything more then 1" thick. if you have extra padding built in... then you might be able to hide a full size pistol and it blend in. if your not sure what will fit. go buy some airsoft toy pistols and see what fits. if there is a specific gun you are looking at getting their might very well be an airsoft version of it. this can help you get familiar with the pistol feel in your hand and practice pulling the trigger or drawing the gun.

2)caliber this is where everyone gets in a tizzy. the bottom line is carry the largest caliber you can and will carry all the time. there is no point carrying a .50 cal DE in the winter and then going without anything in the summer. some talk about the .22L not being good enough. the muzzle energy of the CCI Stinger is very close to that of a .380 and if you have a walther p22 you can carry 10+1 of the stingers vs many of the .380's that have 8 or less. another factor in caliber is if your ammo is cheaper then you can practice more. .22L is dirt cheap, 9mm is cheaper then .4 and so on... i would rather have a .22L that i could place the shots where i want then a .50 cal with less rounds that i might not hit the guy with. .380 is looked down on but there was a shooting in florida where a .380 went thru the tail gate of a truck into the cab and still killed the guy. .380 is just a shorter 9mm. so 9mm will have plenty of power. I agree in the military the 9mm isn't enough. but the military is banned from using but ball ammo. if you use +P and or hollow points the 9mm is a very destructive round.

3) consider where you will carry it. ankle, pocket, Inside the waist band, under arm sling. these will also dictate what type of gun will fit where.

Ok on to what guns to consider:
glock is your ford 150. love it hate it but it does the job and will take a beating.
Khar is an over priced glock but good if you want a stainless one or a size glock doesn't make as in the PM9
Springfield XD' are nice and have a lot of toys to go with them in the box.
Sig, and H&K are great pistols well made but will cost you some $$
S&W their M&P line is great... and i want to get their new Shield once it has been on the market for a few years to let the bugs get worked out.

Ok you mentioned a budget of $500. this pretty much limits you to one pistol and not a summer and winter gun. it sounds like you are leaning toward a .40 already from what has been said. make sure to test fire a .40 in the size of pistol you are going to get... as the smaller the pistol the more the recoil. my 709 slim kicks like a 40/45 and its only a 9mm.

I will assume you want a smaller pistol you can CCW easy:
Taurus 740 slim: single stack .40 cal around $400
S&W M&P Shield: single stack .40 cal around $400

if you choose to go 9mm:
taurus 709 slim
S&W M&P Shield
Kahr PM9
KelTec pf-9
Diamond back db9
Ruger LC9

I hope this helps.

So ended up buying a Smith and Wesson Springfield M&P40. A little more then I wanted to spend but it's a pretty sweet gun, interchangeable grips, and feels good in the hand. I was very close to picking up the 45 version of the gun but the magazine only held 10 rounds.. not what I wanted.

Gonna take it to the range this weekend and test it out. Here are some pics!

my personal opinion is a Springfield XDM .45 / ammo will always be hollow tips except for when I'm at the range.

I'm gonna go fire it after work and see how it is.

Bought a pack of hollow points for it, I hope I never have to use one of the 50 bullets lol

You can practice with target rounds to get a lot of firing in cheap. BUT, also practice with the round you will use for self defence. It's a different animal. If you like to read try "American Gunfight." It's the true story of the attempt to kill Harry Truman. It really shows how screwed up things can get when you don't practice correctly.
