do are cars sound like crap with no mufflers?

I have a rust hole starting on my muffler. Im eventually thinking of just cutting it off and run a pipe to the back and not have one at all or replacing it with a performance one. Any recomendations

If you have a 3.1 you can make it sound pretty decent. The 3.8's sound horrible though.
