Well a stock WS6 has what, 330BHP? And you have 303BHP, so it isn't a huge disparity, but I do doubt his car was a modified WS6, for said story to be true. The masses are similar, but even then, I don't know.
lets not forget here that hp sells cars and torque wins races, my guess is that he was over cammed and had to much power drop off on the low end because he got me from the get but i pulled out ahead when the r's got higher

I personally have never heard of an aftermarket cam causing loss of power on the top end for a performance oriented car. Most aftermarket cams raise the powerband up into the higher revs, not lower it.
Now for economy based cars, like a Geo Metro, YES, there are cams out there that will LOWER the powerband down into the lower revs for economy purposes. In fact, I have an eco cam on my Geo. It's just that I've never seen something like that for an LSx...
