So, just out of curiosity....Does it really matter if you use Dex-Cool or just water? Obviously, if it's just water, you risk freezing if you are in that climate, but will using something other than dex-cool actually cause damage?

flush the system real well and use green coolant dexcool doesnt handle contaminants at all

straight water has the best cooling propertys but no corrosion resistance or boiling point resistance and it freezes
 
But using just water, or a dex-cool/water mixture isn't going to destroy the radiator like I have been told?
 


Dexcool doesnt destroy metal its eats up plastics and rubber Its also tempermental just flush it and go green

Straight water will tare the system up wiith corrosion and oxidation and such aswell as coolant helps raise the boiling point some aswell

Tell him to give you an explanation as to why. If the green is bad, then how did any engines every survive before Dex cool was invented?

My '95 diesel had dex in it when I bought it and the dealership flushed it for me and put green in. Our '99 GP had dex in it and I flushed it myself and put green (or yellow or whatever it is) in it.

Just don't mix green and dex and you'll be fine.
 
A healthy car won't have any trouble with dex. If your car's got a leak to let in a pollutant, dex makes problems, which are somewhat more severe than the symptoms exhibited by polluted green. If you take care of your car and check your coolant every-so-often, there's no outstanding reason in particular to use one over the other.

not to mention the dexcool you get at autopart stores are much better than the dex they used before. ive had dex in mine for over 200k miles. no issues.
 
Running straight water (as in Distilled water aka pure water) won't do any harm to your cooling system as long as you do not have freezing weather (below 32*C). It will destroy anything its inside (Heads, Radiator, block, etc) when it freezes.
Never mix in or use straight tap water, it has minerals in it that will build up inside of your cooling system.

Any reason why you want to use straight water?

Hi

Color has no bearing on what the coolant's anti-corrosive formula is these days.

Many "green" coolants are OAT formulations just like licensed Dex.

Choose your flavor of coolant by the ingredients on the bottle. If it has silicates like G-05, Mopar "Long Life" or Ford "Gold," then it is definitely not a Dex clone.
 


coolant has rust inhibitors in it (obviously to prevent rust) so if your running straight water, thats 1 thing youll want to consider.
the cooling system consists of ALOT of metal....

Hi

Not necessarily.

These "Long Life Coolants" can easily be a Hybrid OAT (HOAT) such as G-05 and the others listed in my previous post that contain reduced amounts of silicates. These coolants are not sensitive to air in the system like a OAT coolant is which not only offers significant improvements in protection to the water pump impeller but helps eliminate the "mud" dex systems often have..

Also, none of these contain the known plasticizer, 2-eha as an additive.
 
Okay, so what I am getting from everyone, is that dex-cool is crap and should be removed from my system asap, and also that everyone recommends a non OAT coolant?
