I just got four new tires for my daily driver. While i was at the tire shop i started to look around and saw some tires for my grand prix. Now when i was there i saw some wide tires, i know the stock tire size for my grand prix is 225/55r17 and what i started wondering is if i could go wider and how wide i could go width wise with the stock rims. 235 or 245 would be the width i am looking for but not sure if i need to get new wheels or just get the tires and mount it on my stockies can anyone explain if this can be done or why not. thanks

245 is about the widest you can go on stock rims. One problem is I don’t think you can get a side wall that will make the OD stock, hence your speedo will be off. But I’m sure your local dealership could fix that for a small fee.

you can get close enough that itll only be off a percent or two from the stock size. you usually want to stay within 3% for overall tire diameter. but yes, a 245 wide tire is about all id run on a set of stock wheels.

I ask one of the guys there and they told me that it would rob that's what I asking here and for the speedometer how much more different would it be in mph estimated ?

the offset on the wheels stock is so high that you could easily get away with putting bigger tires on without rubbing. the guy behind the counter doesnt know what he is talking about. rubbing on stock wheels, lolz to the max.

Most likely he doesnt want to lose his job and be responsible is something does happen. I run into all the time.

So he sticks with the factory specs.
