exhaust system questions!!!!!

Spend 450$ on a exhaust for a 3100, are you serious??-I quote!

I have seen this response often on this and other threads. You guys need to get real about the differences between a 3.1 and 3.8 normally aspirated-THERE IS NOT A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THESE MOTORS!!!! Essentially a 3.8 is a slightly bored 3.1 that makes 25 horsepower more than my 3.1. How do i know this FACT other than looking at the specs is that I have had 3.8's in a 97 GT, 2004 Impala LS, and currently in a 2001 Buick-Wake up-The 3.8 versus the 3.1 is not like comparing an old chevy straight 6 to a 427 V8-There is very difference between a 3.8 and 3.1 and even a lesser difference in HP!

The GM 3400 is the bored out 3100...

I'll leave it at ones a chevy and ones a buick.

If you don't know any of the other differences in the two engines then you'd best check wikipedia.

the 3100 and 3400 is a 60* v6, isnt the 3800 a 90* v6? o yea...TOTALLY THE SAME MOTOR right?

3100 is based on the 2.8L Chevy v6 from back in the day.

The first engine in this family was introduced in 1961 with Buick's 198 cu in (3.2 L) engine, the first V6 in an American car. Because it was derived from Buick's 215 cu in (3.5 L) aluminum V8, it has a 90° bank between cylinders and an odd-fire firing pattern that include the two 'phantom' cylinders from the V8 pattern.

The General Motors 60° V6 family of engines began with the 1980 Chevrolet 2.8 L V6 and continues to be produced today (if one doesn't count a larger block casting with larger bore center and new cylinder heads). Its use in the X-body cars leads some to refer to it as the X engine.

Let me slide? Thanks? The resonator gets rid of the drone dude...I've been there too...not like your the only one who has ever put exhaust on cars. Hence the name...it controls the RESONANCE of the sound. Sure...the converter might get rid of some of the rasp...But 50 times to 1...a 3800 car with a deleted res. sounds like epic crap compared to a cat deleted one...you should know this.

:th_laugh-pointup:

Shows you what you really know...there is A LOT of things different.

bluegtp91, I'm proud that you can spell resonance, truly I am. I guess that's better than the previous name calling. If you don't think a catalytic converter affects sound as much as a resonator, fine. They're all components in a system but something down the line is picking up the slack of the cat delete.

Also one very important thing, a resonator is considered an additional muffler, taking care of whatever resonance the primary muffler can't handle. Therefore you get the right muffler in the first place instead of taking the word of the internet gurus or some low quality clip on youtube. Maybe thats why gutted cat cars sound good? Good combo of muffler and resonator? Just forget about the benefits of a cat. Or if he knows of a shop that will install a catless dp if he doesn't have the ability.

I'm not sure what chances 50:1 have with anything but letting a shop remove his res, hearing that then making the choice to leave it off or simply having it welded back on is better than spending money on a set of mufflers that he might hate and be stuck with. Or even better, see what the shop has in stock and have them slip fitted to hear before he buys? He said he didn't want to spend 800$, I took that as "what can I do for cheap?"

Ive put my opinion in, I've listened to yours. There we go.

HA I'd rather have the Iron Duke over the 3.1 Both are Turds!

Besides the measily 25 HP difference between the 3.8 and 3.1, the 3.1 sounds better to boot!!!! A big difference in the engines is 50-100 HP. Is that the difference or should I look it up on wikipedia? Like I said, 25 HP, you guys are totally delusional about real differences here in the motors.

Oh yeah, one more salient fact that is mentioned numerous times, "one is 60 degree and the other is 90 degree engine", and your point is? Neither engine is a high performance motor that likes to rev, neither! Like I said all those big differences amount to 25 HP advantage on the 3.8 with , 0.7 liter more displacement than the 3.1! So let's all do the math here, for 0.7 liter more displacement one V6 picks up 25 HP over the 3.1. Real high tech stuff here. Get real!!

Umm I think he's saying that, if you have to HEAR a pushrod V6 GM exhaust it's going to sound like s**t. he's right. Keep it as quiet, but with as much flow as possible and as least drone as possible.

wow....your really a complete idiot. Your comparing the 3.1 to the 3.8...LMFAO! And being a dick to the people who do know there ****! Put about 5 lbs of boost to your 3.1 and let me know how that works out for ya. You do realize the 3.8 was named one of the top 10 engines built in the late 90's?? And the 3.1 is rated at 160 and 185 torque at the crank, vs the series 2 n/a 3800 which is 205 and 230 torque. Sorry buddy but your on crack. Neither engine was designed for high performance. But the 3800 atleast had it on there mind, along with reliablity and longevity. If you REALLY wanna argue about which engine is better overall...keep on going man, i'm sure everyone here can flame on with me. Maybe you should join a honda forum or something

Most people here own GTP's or have top swapped... that automatically puts them at 240+ HP versus 175. Thats 65+ Horse which is in your 50-100 HP range.

They're totally different engines...

High performance engines don't need to rev to be fast, see a 3800 with an M90 with a mild cam, intercooler and a 3" or smaller pulley..

THAT makes power.

Whatever the differences are between a 3.1 and 3.8, the FACT remains that it is ONLY 25 HP!!!! Think about that!!!

jbamonte are you this retarded on all of the forums that you get on ?

3.1L are way different than the 3.8L.

3.8L's have potential, 3.1's are TURDS!

Do i really need to go on ?

Best thing to look into is Cutout.
This way it’s when you want it loud and how loud!
Also with out res I find the rasp unbarring at times.
High flow cat and u bend delete with res still there and even look into
Gutting the mufflers. But that’s just my 2cents

why are you guys *****ing about this? to be honest an aftermarket exhaust on any car for the purpose of makin it sound better or louder is a waste of money. i was gonna put exhaust on mine but until i learned that our exhaust is good for much more power why would you even change it? loud exhaust are for ricers and rednecks... i would know im a redneck with a chevy truck and loud ass exhaust...lol. just leave it alone and if people are givin you sh@t about something get over it... its not like theyre planning to come to your house and hit you with a blunt object... k now i feel better... im not mad anymore:)

Gutting mufflers? Negative.

Cutout? Only if you take it to the track and back...cutouts suck and leak over time and/or short out.
