I have a 98 grand prix gtp and I can smell oil when the car is running. The front of the motor looks like it has oil sludge on it. could this be a bad valve cover gasket?

Sure sounds like it. Their is a recall for this to prevent engine fires. I personally think its injector o-ring failure that's causing the fires but whatever. Dealer will replace the front for free
 
I called the dealer and they said they only move some wires to prevent the oil that leaks out from catching on fire. I Just ran to auto zone and bought some new gaskets and I will change them this weekend.
 
If you have a GTP the recall is for the valve cover gaskets. The GT engines is the one where they move wires around. Go to the dealer and have them look up the recall and remind them you have a GTP.
 
yup your right!! I called them back and asked them about it and its going in thursday!! thanks for letting me know and saving me $50 bucks and a few hours of my time.
