Well since Im the only one defending the cops....If they came to my house cause I was a drug dealer...chances are that TV or game console was stolen! LOL.
So, according to you, he's guilty (of both drug dealing and now theft) until proven innocent? Even if he is found guilty, it doesn't give the police or anyone else the right to take his property for their own personal use.
Its not like they just was like HEY lets go play Wii!! lol They had a purpose to go there...they went there..it took them 6hrs took lo and bag up everything..they got bored..omg!! THEY ARE PEOPLE! We do "stupid" stuff when we are bored. Im pretty sure everyone of you has at one point or another use the net at your work while on the clock..or used your cell phone when you was told not to!
Acutally, no. I'm expected to uphold a standard of integrity and professional conduct. I believe people who have the ability to deprive citizens of property, liberty, and life, and are charged with protecting those same rights, should be held to a similar standard.
I'm in the Navy, and we did have a similar case (people playing video games on work computers) at another training command. Over 100 people were questioned, around 50-ish attended
non-judicial punishment, and over 20 were either removed from the program or discharged from the Navy. (It was a while ago, so I don't remember the exact numbers.)
A four star admiral (one of the most senior in the Navy) then flew to the other training commands in the program to brief us on the incident. His main concern wasn't that some of the people were playing games on government computers, but that several others knew about it but did nothing about it.
How about you thank them for getting drugs outta that place if there was a drug dealer near me and cops busted them and wanted to play Wii soooo be it!!! They got those crack heads away from me and my child! I guess again me "defending" them is because well for one...I have ALOT of friends in law enforcement and two its not THAT big of a deal!!! Its not like they was caught snorting the drugs! Or having a gang bang!!!
I thank them for enforcing the law. However, I hold every cop there (not just the ones who actually played the game) responsible for not enforcing the laws against going into someone's home and using their property without their permission or legal justification.
I have a great deal of respect for police officers. I understand that enforcing the law while protecting citizen's rights is a tough, dangerous, and often thankless job. However, when they cross the line and violate a suspect's rights, they cross the line that separates them from the criminals. That system is the suspects property until proven otherwise, and they violated his rights by using it. More than an isolated incident, this is an indication of habitual dereliction throughout the organization. Any solution needs to focus on restoring a culture of integrity and professionalism.
So, what do I think should happen? I think all of the officers who were present should receive at least an official written reprimand (or something similar, I don't know much about how police are disciplined). The cops who actually played the game should receive a more severe punishment (e.g. suspension). I don't believe any of them need to lose their jobs.
