Has anyone in the US Adapted A gilmer belt drive to the l67

vsl67

Im thinking of putting a gilmer belt drive on my L67 and want to know if its been done in the US ?

How did they do it ? run it off the crank pulley or a double idler pulley ?also I heared stories of people snapping their cranks in severe bad fires becuase the supercharger can lock up does anyone know if it true?

I seem to remember someone doing a cog-belt setup, at least on the supercharger, but I do not think it was anything mainstream.

I would think if the supercharger seized up, the worst that would happen is a broken serpentine belt. I cannot imagine it being able to snap a crank!

Gr8racingfool (Jason Farnsworth) has the Cogged setup that you speak of. He's put a lot of time and effort into it but i am unsure if he ever got it perfected.

Thats what I though the belt would give way before any damage was done to the crank

I was going to run it off the double idler pulley by welding these two together

This also will allow the belt to slip on the smooth pulley in the event of a back fire

Here a quote from the l67 forum have you heared of this before -

"Also, watch out with gilmer drive on an L67. If the engine backfires, it is possible that you could break something, like your crank unless you fit a burst plate to the LIM. The reason being, is that the backfire wo'nt have anywhere to go due to the sealing of the blower and it forcing air in. As the air has to go somewhere, it will try and go up into the blower, possibly momentarily locking the blower up. The gilmer belt isn't going to stop and the weakest link is the crank. I haven't seen this happen, but I know it can happen on 308s. So just be careful."

It is on here too...Jason went through A LOT of R&D, time...oh...and money to get it right...and I bet he still has a few things to perfect on it since it likes to eat belts for dinner.

I still think it is a badass design though.

yes, this is a badass and potentially useful idea, but id think youd have to be running one hell of a setup for it to make a difference. with a little more belt wrap on the regular setup i dont see why you would ever have a problem with belt slip. putting on one more idler by the blower snout is pretty damn easy and cheap to do as well. if you have a belt wrap kit AND an 8 rib setup i dont think youll ever have belt slip on anything due to our limitations for blowers. unless youre running a whipple, i dont think you need any of this stuff.

therefore, i do not see a need for this at all.

Honestly...I think you need mucho horsepower to make full use of a cog belt. A 3800 platform is perfectly fine with a smaller belt and oversized tensioner.

id go as far as saying an actual belt wrap bar with an extra idler bolted to the front of the blower case would make it so you never have belt slip with an eight rib setup, but im sure there are guys out there making enough power to slip the belt with an extra idler and a six rib belt.

I'm running a belt wrap kit on mine, its well designed I think...

I'm not really pushing my setup, its more for looks but there are guys out there running 2.6" pullies, 6 rib and this belt wrap with 0 slippage. It does its job well IMO, very nice piece.

BTW, Are there any cog kits for you aussie L67 guys over there or is it all custom? I'm curious...

Wow I love the look of that setup where did you get it from?

I was only considering a belt drive set up for the whine ,I really miss it my 455 1957 pontiac was running a belt drive setup & it sounded awsome

I would have to get new fuel rails and relocate the coils or get a US coil bracket to adapt a belt wrap ,the holden l67 seems to a little different to the us version but I realy like the look of it

Im not sure if it would work with factory rails or not, you would have to try it. For the coil bracket, you could just move elsewhere, people have done it no problem.

Just a quick question I noticed in Bio248 pictures that it has spark plug lead holders over the supercharger where do you get these from?
