Reagan? A President who made deals with Iran? Who was in the early stages of Alzheimer's at the end of his term? Ran up the national debt like nobody's business? Yeah, good times.
 
Did you guys hear about the 60+billion dollars the government plans to spend on foreign disease control..or something to that effect. The article was on cnn.com

He ran up the debt, but I totally agreed with it in that case. We were in the Cold War. We got into an arms race with Russia. We won the Cold War by spending. Reagan is one of the few Republican Presidents I think did a good job.

Basically in a nutshell. Russia tried to build more than us. We kept spending to build weapons. Russia could barely keep up but kept spending anyways. We beat Russia into a debt they couldn't handle and that they just recovered from not even 2 or 3 years ago.

That was sheer brilliance in Reagan because he knew the stupidity of Russia and that they would spend to the bitter end to save face.

Reagan's move that was awful... Trickle Down Theory....
 
Who's to say that the Cold War wouldn't have ended WITHOUT the debt spending, at least to the degree that we have a several trillion dollar debt now? Soviet style Communism doesn't work. The Chinese have tweaked "Communism" to allow for some degree of Capitalism, and it works for them. I'm not saying ending the Cold War was a bad thing, of course, but it's not all Reagan's spending that did it. It just accelerated the downfall.

Agree 100% on Trickle Down economics not working, but don't tell that to Republicans Congressmen and women. George H.W. Bush got it right - Voodoo Economics.
 
Well I mean... the Cold War basically was based around spending. It was a huge arms race. The Trillion dollar debt we got into didn't effect us as bad as this one did. Remember during the Cold War all the money we spent went into technological development of better warfare weapons. Despite the debt the country profited a bit as well. Granite we were in debt and many Americans had a rough time, rarely anyone got the point we are in now. It wasn't a debt made by housing industries, or the stock market.

You are right that Communism and Socialism has proven to not work and Russia probably would've eventually fallen as is. The problem was if we allowed them to build and build and if we didn't build against them... they would've posed a huge threat and been able to command us what to do.

It's kind of interesting that something like this happens every few centuries. I'm sure you remember learning about the British Navy. It was the biggest and they pride themselves on that. Well the French decided to challenge their size and just kept building ships. Eventually they got into a "Ships Race," haha. Not much fighting happened, just a lot of building. The bigger it is the more power you have. It doesn't always hold true, but it's a good intimidation factor.

What got us out of debt finally was the Internet Boom. Clinton looked great because of it, but it wouldn't have mattered what President was in office, they would have looked fantastic had they been aided by the Internet.

Clinton made a very bad decision of basically allowing everyone their shot at living the American Dream. During his terms, credit became so easily obtainable that people making $40,000 a year on a combined income could buy a $500,000 house.

I'm more on the Liberal side of politics, but I have some Conservative views as well, like on hunting.

I discussed with friends that if John McCain really wanted to be President, he needed Al Gore to be elected in 2000 or George Bush to have lost in 2004. Gore would have been a one termer after 9/11 attacks, and McCain wins in 2004. Bush loses in 2004 and Kerry wins. 2008, Kerry gets blamed for the bad economy and McCain wins. Politics is just as much about ideas as timing. No Republician was going to win the Presidency in 2008, no matter what. And I'm sure Hillary Clinton knew this, which is why she stayed as long as she did - if she won the Democratic nomination, she probably would have been elected.

Whoever was elected, he or she would probably be doing some kind of package like what is be prepared now. If it was a Republican, Repubs would blame Congress. With a Demo as President, Repubs are blaming "Washington." But they haven't provided any better idea, other than, "Not what the Demos offer!"

Dumbas* prety much has destroyed GM and Made it into a government owned buissness. Kind of defeats the purpose of america being a democracy and having free individual buissness. Whats to stop the government from tightening restrictions to kill the last american manufacturer Ford? I head Fiat will be buying oput GM how the heck is that possible that little tiny company nabbing up one of Our Big Three? why how and where are we headed i fear Obama will be leading the country into a socialistic government and evryone will goa long with it because he uses his slogan "Change" and "yes we can" obviously he can't he can't keep us from losing one of the great corporations of our country who have been around for more than a century and now since we have to go green and save the environment and make smaller cars with less power even thought america is screaming for powerful cars yet. The restrictions set on the auto industry by his administration are just completly outrageous. I think This will go for all of us on this Forum.

It truly amazes me that people thing Obama is this powerful, that in a little over 100 days, it is HE who has done all this damage, and for 8 years before it was all skittles and rainbows? Auto industry restrictions were in place well before January. Guess who instituted the original 55 MPH speed limit? Wait for it... a Republican President!

Do some research. Fiat is not a "little tiny company" any more than GM was the greatest car company in the world before Obama became President.

Ford was smart enough to PREPARE IN ADVANCE for what they saw coming, and thus they haven't needed a bailout. You fault a company for living within their means, but not GM for pumping out Hummers and other huge SUVs, but not saving the EV1 or coming out with a hybrid 10 years ago? Yep, that too was Obama's fault. He should have know when he was still an attorney that GM should be producing a hybrid or researching it in 1999. Man, what is wrong with him? Can't he predict the future?

This thread, or another similiar one, will go on until November 2012, at the earliest. Someone will always complain, someone will always defend, and someone will always say, "why are you asking this?"

You DO care how long the thread goes on, otherwise you wouldn't have posted. If you don't care, why did you post the first time? Troll much?
