Sounds like a flexplate noise, if so pulling Eng/Trans

That's pretty chewed up in there... Lol

At least you know what it is... While the engine is out you can get a full re-gasket kit in it, with that it'll last for another 200k. Lol
 


I know you said low budget, but do what you can while it is all out...

Much easier, as you would expect, to work on stuff while it's out...

Atleast entertain a timing chain, crank seal (both sides of crank/rear main), cam/lifters, misc gaskets...

4-500 more in parts is worth the time you spent pulling the "nugget" out...

Come out ahead in the long run...

Oil pan gasket at a minimum!!
 
Oil pan gasket was done over last winter, hopefully shes good, lol.

Not putting 400-500 into this car. Just glad the flex plate and 8 bolts only cost me(well my son) 72 bucks out the door.
I do have the oil filter housing gasket as I think that might be leaking, and also heard it helps a little to remove prior for more wiggle room.
I figure why not replace the water pump and gasket while its out.

I had him purple power the crap out of the motor to clean up the oil thats made its home there. (he said it looks like new now)
Going to add some leak dye to it, run it for a bit. Then when its out, inspect for whats leaking, and take care of it.

I suspect the rear main housing gasket to be leaking. I hear the actual rear main seals usually do not leak, but the housing is the culprit.
In case the actual main seal is leaking, does this require special tools to remove, and install? I seen an install tool for it and it was like 500 lol (OTC brand) No thanks.
 
rear cover comes right off, locktite the little bolts and snug them up good. rtv the pan and both sides of the bottom 2 inches of gasket for the rear cover.

Yeah, I read that on one of the threads, but just curious if the actual crank seal is a pain, or requires special tools to remove or install?

Also the front timing cover is that going to be an issue if ends up needing a new gasket?

Engine coming out in the next day or two, liked to be prepared. I think Ive spent more time reading up on the how too's than the time it will actually take to do the job, lol.
 


seal is easy, 2 2x4's, lay the cover over them so the seal is in the clear and tap it out with a hammer. flip it over and tap in the new seal.
 
no one comes with intentions of pulling a engine, but a little coaxing later, its happening. i for one never thought id be pulling my engine, and i did.
 


when you change the crank seal, don't get one from carquest. I did, and it failed within 50 miles. the one from gm cost the same, and has held up since it was installed about 2 years ago.

He has no problem doing that on his own. Against my opinions. 17 year old, lives with his mom, goes to school and has a part time job. Stop spending everything you make on modding the car, you need to save to fix it or when it breaks!

Mods, smaller pulley, tune, headers, hot air intake, tint projector headlights, only because factories were fogged to all hell.
Repairs, trans mount, engine mount, both axles, oil pan gasket, rear brakes, fuel lines from filter to engine, sway bar during the flex plate job since bar is cracked.

I may have missed something, but you see where I am going.

PS. Im sure I will be back with needing help during this job.
 
doing a set of F body brakes on the front would be a good mod as well. it's almost criminal how pathetic the oem brakes are compared to the F body brakes from the 2000 ish camaro.

Dual piston FTW! And I would consider projector HIDs a safety concern kind of mod... Light output is terrible stock, and being able to see at night is a necessity.

No more modding please! lol Cars just to old, and the salt belt hasn't been to nice to it.

I just want him to keep it running decent, and make it last a bit longer

I've heard of the front timing cover cracking upon tightening down...

Just use the torque spec and you should be ok (change timing chain and cam)

lol
 
Do what I did.. drain coolant, yank engine, swap flexy, lower back in, fill it back up with coolant and smile for your 3 hours of work while calling it a coolant swap. lol

The flex plate actually rotated about 3/4 " from the center hub! how was it even still on and running is beyond me!

It was rubbing on the case housing, other than a little worn off metal, i think it will survive? Opinions?
