I looked a little. The closest ones to me under a grand are in Texas. They are about $700. Then they ding you for $300 freight and boom, you're up over a thousand again.

The rest of them say "call for price" So sick of that game. They ask you what kind of prices you've already gotten so they can see how bad to screw you. Just give me a price you crook. I absolutely hate traditional salvage yards. Ebay, Pick-a-part, and my favorite Craigslist seem to be the best bet.

I swear I saw a couple for sale a few months ago for a decent price but I don't see anything good now, have you consider a turbo 400?

Nah. I want overdrive. Worse case scenario, I convert the one I've got to 2wd. If I'm going to tear it down for that, I might as well do a rebuild while I'm in there.

I think people might be interested in seeing that anyway.

a local guy mentioned the 4L80 is pretty stout already, and really the only thing it needs to support 600-700 hp is a shift kit and maybe a torque converter. It does seem like it would be cheaper just to convert it over and rebuild it yourself.

The trans-go HD2 kit is already in my shopping cart. :cool: I think it would be cool to see how many of my 4t65e tricks translate to the 4l80e.

It does seem like it would be cheaper just to convert it over and rebuild it yourself.

At this point, yes. When I first started researching the conversion, the general consensus was it would be best to find one that was already 2wd. That it wasn't worth the hassle. Looks like I'm the exception to this rule.

Ordered about a week ago. Got them today. I didn't think $35 for a set of 8 - 8mm wires was too bad. Made in the USA too.

I'm hoping I'll spend a fair amount of time looking through the rear view at big clouds of tire smoke and 11's. :burnrubber0: That hole in the dash was really bugging me.

I did pass on a nice set of stock alloy wheels and a decent set of buckets. Told myself, have to get swap done first.

After going back and forth, doing a bunch of research, and talking to the guy at the trans shop around the corner, I decided to convert the 4wd trans I have to 2wd. The parts, in order:

Extension housing, output shaft, output speed sensor, reluctor tone ring, and orifice plug

I caught a good deal on the housing and shaft. $75 shipped off ebay. Came with a new bushing and seal. Speed sensor was under $20 from Amazon. Reluctor ring is a brand new "upgraded" Sonnax piece. Under $23 from American Powertrain Warehouse. Orifice plug, just over $8. Also from Amazon. Total cost = $125.97.

I don't think there are any perishable parts that will need replaced during the tear down. If there are, they should be included in the HD2 kit that I plan to install at the same time. I'd really like to do a write up on the conversion. For all the time I spent searching, I didn't see anything like that.

So, I cut out of work early today and hit the Pick-a-part. Grabbed this little gem. Not really ready for it yet, but work is slow right now and rumored to be getting really busy in the near future. Not sure when I'll have the time to get back out there. So I went for it. $150 out the door, but I worked my butt off to get it out. I was going to swap out the driver side axle for a shorter passenger side axle from another unit, but I ran out of gumption. I guess that can wait.
