S/C low rpm whine.

My 2000 GTP just started whining at low rpm, like below 2000. I was on my way to work this morning and in started sputtering and jolting as if I had a misfire. I'm almost certain it isn't misfiring because I just did a tune up about two months ago. Now this was at 70 mph since I drive the highway for about an hour everyday. When I went to lunch just driving through the city it whines a lot at low rpm and it seems at a loss for power.

I could really use some advice and tips on what to look for. I'd really appreciate it guys. This is my only vehicle at the moment and I can't afford for it to go down! Thanks in advance for whoever comments.

Check engine light?

Have you visually inspected the engine bay at all?

I understand you've got an issue but it's kinda vague. What all did you do to "tune it up".

Get back with that info...see what we can get from that.

No lights. Nothing noticeable under the hood. And I did fuel pump, plugs wires, air filter the basic stuff.

I'm just at a loss it was running great since I got it and kinda took me by surprise. Kinda panicked a bit.

New parts arent always good parts or another way to say it is, they aren't a for sure thing.

I'd start checking things that can make noise. Remove one of the belts, drive it. Then remove the other and see if the noise is still there. Yes you can drive without the water pump for a few minutes on a cooler motor, it won't harm it. It's possible it's the power steering making the noise or the transmission pump making noise. I'd check both fluid levels while your at it.

Well I appreciate the help guys but I think I got if figured out. The reason it was acting like it was at a loss of power is because the tranny is slipping. I just took it out for lunch and at a stop light it disengaged completely. So yea, my tranny is gone FML. Good fluid level and all still quit.

OK here's the weird part. Its only slipping after it drives for a little bit. I just moved it around the yard a bit. And there is a light grinding noise that seems like it is coming from the bell housing. I'm still at a loss though. It was fine yesterday, but it was the coldest it has been this morning so maybe that's affecting something.

So I just priced one at 600. But the guy told me that these trannys have a valve body issue that's pretty common. Honestly this is the first I've heard of this issue. What would be the thing to do to determine if that's the problem?

Whines in the trans usually indicate bearing failure, or pump failure. Disengaging at a stop light could be a forward apply piston seal is getting worn inside the drum. There's a plague of issues that start to pop up on higher mileage transmissions.

So in other words it might just be better to buy another one?

If it's inside the transmission, then you'll probably be money and time ahead in just replacing it.
Yea, that's probably what I'll do. Just sucks you know. An hour from home and no way of getting back. Looks like I'm bunking with my dad for a while.

OK so new question. Simply because I keep getting these theories in my head. The whining noise could almost be interpreted as a light grinding noise to my ears. Now this noise appears to be coming from the bell housing area.

Question being, could my torque converter have gone bad?

I dropped half a quart of Lucas into the tranny and it appears to have lessened the noise and drivability improved slightly.

only way to know is to drop the pan and see whats in there.

clogged filter will also make the pump whine, you hear the pump via the bell housing.

Would anybody know if the tranny from a 99' gtp would be the exact same thing a 2000 has?

The parts guy at the salvage yard asked me for the ID on it. Apparently it could have been an XBB or an XAB

A bonneville or park ave hd transmission works, same with a regal GS transmission. You will want to find a 97-02 model for a direct fit (2000+ cooler lines are different, but you can swap the fittings). Also use your flex plate and get a new torque converter aswell, you do not want any metal that was in the old transmission/converter to get dumped into the new one.

Just the trans mounts are different on an H body. Otherwise they share the same final drive ratio and case, starter position is the same aswell.

It needs to be a 2.93 gearing, NA cars are 2.86, 3.05's or 3.29 gearing.
