Subway's GT: Time to close my legs, it smells everywhere

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

I don't know the root of the trouble, just seems theres a resistance to wisdom present. In all fairness, one user never really knows who the other "is". Bill and Scott have helped solve problems with many many cars just like yours. So if they tell you something that sounds like bad news, as in the case of yeah FPRs that are a little expensive, its unwise (IMO) to chase other explanations. Its safe to assume Bill is now and has always been on your car's side. The Cat in him enjoys playing with a catch so all is in fun. You seem to be doing ok with the thread name circus, so you'll be OK. Just re-read everything carefully and continue to seek clarity when needed. Again, read things carefully... then again. Then do the work, buy the part or whatever. With these cars, problems are usually small but don't always make sense at first. I have a very old understanding of the basics, yours is newer and things do get lost in translation.

I will admit, I was weary of the FPR of how much it was new. Like mentioned numerous times before, no job=no spending. So spending $60 on a little part didn't seem logical. But then Bill said Scotty said he most likely had a used FPR lying around. That's abetter option. So I didn't really turn down that idea. And now Bill is saying my FPR is good, so I shouldn't need to worry about that. But I understand what you are getting at. I will re-read everything from now on and will not turn down ideas as often.

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

FWIW, I took my FPR out and kinda back-douched it with carb cleaner then reinstalled it. Kinda the same thing, I hoped it wasn't the $200+ fuel pump, but it was. Bill said he'd try a $30 JY unit but I wanted new.

Heres what I think Bill might be cautioning you about... new fuel filter setup leaks (just assume, ok). Line runs dry overnight, puddle evaporates, fumes linger on floor or gather in engine bay, you stir air by raising hood and smell it. Start engine, circulation is present and smell is gone. Just a theory.

Now... if it leaks at the fuel rail inlet... you better believe that will torch your car right up. Any rail area leaks are hazardous as hell. Plastic lines and connections are easily damaged and leaks aren't always easy to spot. On the other hand, Scott and I both changed fuel pumps and had the seal mysteriously disappear some time later... well, I park in a garage and smelled gas first thing, just like your smell. So gas smell just means leak somewhere. I always re-check recent work areas first.

When I did my fuel filter, the first time it wasn't tight enough. I tightened it more and then it leaked drops slower. Tightened it more until it didn't leak. Scotty even said it was done leaking at that point then. Took his word and so far he's right. Only other area where fuel could be leaking is the fuel injector ports on the LIM. I did hang the fuel injectors so that could've put pressure on lines and crack them? But a cracked line where no seals are would leak continuously, no? I changed all the injector o-rings upon re-installment. Saturday, I will start the car, smell for gas and look in the fuel injector ports for wet spots. Are there any other areas that could be bad? I didn't mess with the fuel rail there than the injector o-rings and nuts to take the rail off. So nothing should be wrong there.

And my LIM job was done in July. Only time fuel system was messed with.

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

The fuel rail itself can easily be bent, as can the injector clips. O-rings can be damaged by installation. I'm just a bodyman and have said more than I should already. Do continue to check those newer connections periodically until the gas smell thing is solved, nobody wants to see fire pics ha ha. Also notice the one spot here, where the paint burnt through on the hood. Hint hint...

Why do you say that? I haven't noticed the gas smell lately because when I start my car, I normally go inside right away and let it warm up, or sit inside for a minute or two and then take off, so I'm not under the hood smelling anything. But this weekend I will go more in depth with it.

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

That spot is right over where the fuel line from the body connects to the rail on the engine. Bill mentioned that after saying FPR is OK.

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

Wasn't trying to be cryptic or mean.. I was merely saying that leaks can occur where new work was recently done. It's the old thing about disturbing something that hasn't been moved in years and years. It's more prone to a leak or issue after you disturb it. Maybe because old things are set in their ways (like old guys).

On the fuel filter, I don't prefer the setup you used, therefore I'd be worrying about it seeping. A smell like you are mentioning is small, likely a seep or a quick spurt from a fuel line o-ring etc. Did you clip the fuel lines back into the plastic holder on the EGR shield?

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

Why do you say that?

I missed the "bolded" text...

Because I was posting so much that I was having trouble following the plot of Vengeance Valley last night. If you had a 1965-75 GM car or truck, I could assist with most mechanical issues. These 97-03s aren't second nature to me yet so the other guys here are better guides and listening to them carefully can help you in your quest for a better GP. Sometimes I try to help clear up mis-communications. I am a body specialist by trade, and should really stick to those kind of issues.

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

Oh and you mentioned a wiper issue. To me, it sounded like the wiper trans and board and switch could all have problems. I've been all over the wiper trans and motor assembly but know squat about switch trouble. If I were you, I'd remove the plastic cowl and try to see the noise ha ha.

I understand why most people don't prefer my fuel filter setup, but it was the only way it was gonna get done. I'm weak, yes; but that line wasn't gonna budge, and if it did, something likely would've broke. Plus it makes things 10x easier next time it needs to be changed. I know you weren't being mean, I just didn't know what you were getting at, but now I do. All the fuel lines were indeed clipped back into the big clamp on the EGR shield.

I was hoping it wasn't the motor'trans assembly. The videos on YT made it seem like a stressful job and lots of things could go wrong. And the clicking noise sounded more inside the car than outside, that's why I was thinking the wiper control module thing.

Run away yep lol.

Wiper delay module is located on wiper trans, underneath it

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

And... experience talking here. If it's not a parking issue based on the little tab that bends. Replace the entire thing from a JY. Cost me $30 when I did one. Wasn't hard either.

Buying a module would be very costly.

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

Well, my radio is all back together. CD player and radio works, but the little display doesn't come on. Since the CD player works, that means the jack will work. But Scotty thinks the display ribbon cable may have gotten pulled out a bit on accident. I haven't decided on if I want to go at it now while the dash is apart, or do it when it bothers me too much. Bulbs worked fine before the pocket so that isn't the problem. If the cable is not the problem, then I will say screw it.

Re: Ohhhh that's a tasty meataball!!!!!

So I decided to take it apart as I already had the dash apart. And of course..... everything was plugged in. Which means I broke something when doing this. No big deal. Would much rather have an AUX jack than a clock, even though a clock was nice to have. Guess I have to use my watch lol.

Re: I dip my balls in Jared Fogle's personal marinara sauce

Update: So I took a drive an hour ago. And I wanted to go see if I could find the source of my fuel leak. So even though I smelt my FPR hose earlier, I decided to smell it again. This time, I could smell fuel. Not a super strong smell, but definitely could tell it was there. Now it had an hour of time to evaporate and such, so I can only assume it was stronger right after my drive. So it looks like, yes, it does need to be replaced.

I forgot to mention, I checked each fuel injector port and saw nothing wet or out of the ordinary. And the fuel lines in that plastic cover looked good.

Re: I dip my balls in Jared Fogle's personal marinara sauce

Updated update: I started the car this time and looked around the injector ports. Still nothing. But the smell of gas is in the front of the motor. And when you around to the back and smell the exhaust, you can smell gas.
